Well the fact that personal statement is not looked at until after we are chosen for interviews and has no role to play in getting interviews has relieved me tremendously. I was constantly thinking its my personal statement that i'm not getting enough calls. Thank God its something else that i couldn't have changed in my CAF!

Response to the English speaking skills. This is VERY important!!! In US, everyone is from somewhere else, but people only know from accent!!! It is a VERY good investment to try an accent reduction class prior to interview. HOWEVER< a higher score is MORE important, Peace! The Fisch

Dr. Fischer do you think its important that we schedule the interview during the latter half of the interview season. There are hypotheses where people say its better if we time the interviews in the latter half than the early dates saying that by that way they will have a better recollection and improve the chances of being ranked in a better position on the programs ROL. Thanks.

I don't like praising people, but I have to say, you really are an outstanding teacher. I loved your CK tapes. Your the reason I got a 96 in step 2. Thank you for making me a better doctor.

Wow thanks Dr. Fischer for helping us in so many ways! Well, I have a doubt... I applied as a couple with my husband, we have a very similar background and the same Step 1 grade (and no, we did NOT cheat lol) but he is already ECFMG certified while I´ll take Step 2 ck next month (and he did great in both exams)... could that affect OUR application? How do you treat couples? He has gotten 4 interviews already while I just have 1. Does that mean I wont be called for the other ones he already have or I might receive them later? Do we get to be interviewed the same day? Sorry, dont know anyone else applying as a couple so dont know how this works. Again, thank you for your so valuable time!!!

Dear Dr. Fischer I have 2 questions for you 1) is it ok to apply for both prelim and categorical at the same program? or it would give an impression that I'm undecided? 2) does working as a medical assistant count as USCE? thank you

I am so glad I am a member of this great forum. Sir, I am an old img, as old as they can get. 19yrs since graduation with relatively good scores, 94/94/82 at steps 1,2,3. I am board certified in my home country as a surgeon since 1997. I am told I will have a hard time generally but I should seriously consider IM as a back-up for surgery. Question is, how do I convince anybody that I am interested in IM? Asides from which, what are your feelings about a candidate like me. We are so blessed to have you on our forum. Another fan of yours,

wow! really? i didn't know that! so how about if you were a very good student and doctor in a relatively small med sch in a third world nation? among applicants with comparable scores, the ones who hailed from a better country will be preferred?? could you please tell us which nations/continents fall higher up on the ladder? thank you, dr fischer.

I have been bugging this entire forum for the past 3 months on question number 2 ! Does working as a medical assistant count as USCE ?! I worked as one for almost 2 years; Ive had people ask me about it, and Ive been hesitant to tell them that a medical assistant position serves as "better" experience than just an observership. And yes, I did have "hands-on" experience at the paid position.

Thanx Dr Fisch... You answer a potential OB/GYN question with low scores.... I have one more Q. If I have low scores but research expereience ( M.S in Biochemistry) is this making me a more apealing candidate?

The usual questions about USCE are what kind of experience you have and they are interested in "hands on" kind of experience where you not only observe but you take care of few patients. The USCE that helped me was called externship, here is a topic with some programs where you can get in. http://www.prep4usmle.com/forum/thread/14573 One IMG in my program was working as an MA in the same hospital and she got an R1 position last year at a time where no other IMG were inteviewed so ... hey everything is possible. Good luck

Just wanted to thank you Dr. Fischer. For all the puzzles you solved for me. Whether I get into a residency here or not... I enjoyed my USMLE journey because of your mantra: "think of the difference that you will make in one man's life due to the knowledge you gained here". Truly said ' angels fly ... cause they take themselves lightly'. You are a teacher par exellence. The real GURU who not only imparts knowledge but also lets you know how to use it. My dream is to meet you in person one day.

Thank you very much, I think you already know this, but never forget that thanks to you many of us get good scores on our exams, I also watched your videos for step 2 ck and got a 259/99, thanks Dr. Conrad!! you are truly the best!!

Dr.Fischer: You mentioned that you sort the applicants with scores. Does this mean that all applicants with minimum scores will be reviewed by you ? Or only those with high 90s. I have 88/85/ CS passed all at first attempt. U.S PhD, strong U.S LORs, no visa needed. No interviews so far. Do you think I have slim chance of getting a position due to the low scores ? Thank you very much !

Hi Rita , since clerkship are no longer in Canadain system, ur residency in Canada must be half way through . If I were u , will finish the CAnadain one then after Canadian Royal College board exm done then may or may not get into the USA program. What's the reason not to finish Canadian one then will get H visa ?? then do residency again in USA . Sorry about the curiosity , since even new grad are v. hard to get into Canadian residency as Canadian born IMG . Also is there any contract , to give underservice 5 yr , more or less as IMG in Canadian Int Med residency as return of service. Even as P.A position can only get after exm, interview , hired by hospital only after .. after passing all Canadian exm pretty much but no residency , there is 2 yr PA contract that u cannot break . Dr Fischer.. I have always wanted to meet u. Sadly I didnt get an Interview call from SUNY Downstate last year. But maybe karma had other plans - so I am comforted by being able to virtually meet u here.. I am doing my Intern year in a Uni program in Detroit. I wanted ur tips on how to impress my mentors and faculty. And your general tips on what to read and how to read? Do you have a something like Videos for IM boards which can be downloaded on a subscription basis? Or are there DVDs available of your Yearly Board Review Series? Your humble servant Apurva Thanks a ton for everything..
