This sounds interesting! I'm an enormous fan of Conrad Fischer. So if this is legit, then I do have a few questions: 1. Which score do you hold to be more important? The Step 1 or the Step 2 score? 2. What is it about the candidate that might impress you most on the interview day?

my question is when you see the avalanche of applications how do you go about in selecting the candidates you like to interview. Finally one burning question how will step-3 scores affect the candidates interview chances if he has high scores on both steps. Do you see that he will take the exam and pass based on his previous USMLE scores or go for those who have their step-3 score for extending an interview call.

This is really a great news! Thanks Dr. Conrad Fischer. We look forward to your advice this match season. Given the fact that there are set criteria for applications, are PD's strict about "all" the criteria, or do they look at the application as a whole?

Wow, Dr. Conrad Fischer, can't even start to tell you how huge of a fan I am, and how your teaching methods helped me a lot through the exams. I just have one question. IF you have already reviewed an applicant's application packet early in the season (because he was so hell-bent eager on sending the application the minute sept. 1 struck), is there by any chance you'll be looking through the application again later once a new document gets uploaded, say a stronger recommendation perhaps? It has been cleared all throughout the forum that newly uploaded documents will HAVE to be downloaded no matter what, but I don't think there will be any guarantees that the reviewer will look back on it IF the application has been reviewed already. What's your take on this? Thanks for having the time to visit us here.

Dr.Fischer had some difficulties with login info here. He emailed me tonight this message to post in his name. I think we figured out the login problem and he will be able to post messages using his username.
Conrad Fischer wrote: Hi, Would you post these replies for me? 1. The step 1 and 2 scores are equal for IMGs since they must have both to be ECFMG certified. For US grads who have ONLY step 1 70% of the time when they apply , step 1 is more important 2.On the interview day, you can only give a 20 minute 'snapshot'. Appearance, and being friendly, smiling and looking/soundign interested are the most improtant things. 3. If you have good step 1 and 2 scores, you should NOT take step 3 until AFTER The rank list is sumbitted . You have nothing to gain. If you need an H1 visa and MUST take it, it looks just like step 2. 3. When there is an 'avalance' of aplications, a secretary often sorts by scores, then US versus international grads. Some places just don't sponsor visas and these will be automatically sorted out. 4. Apologies for not writing in sooner, Program Directors assume you will do the same as you did on previous exams. If the first two scores are great, they assume step 3 will be great. That is why should should, if possible, take the exam in the window between the step 1 and 2 result being back and the application results know, and the start of residency. Warmly, The Fisch

Thanks for the reply Dr. Fischer. I wanted to ask you about the avalanche of applications in the sense like say if you put a certain score as filter then the program coordinator forwards you the applicants who have scores that match your criteria. Then how do you go about selecting applicants for interview given the limited number of slots available compared to the number of applicants like do you go through the personal statement the supporting letters. I thank you in particular and kaplan for helping me prepare well for USMLE and making the journey a rewarding experience.

Dear Dr. Fischer, Could you please let us know, how the rank order list be made? How does the matching process work. After performance in interviews, I think ROL prep is the most crucial part. Thanks.

I would like to ask you regarding the Personal Statement. How much importance is being given to this document in considering a candidate for an interview?. And 2nd question - After interviewing that candidate what aspects are considered to give him/her the ranking?. i.e performance during interview, scores, US clinical expereince, graduation year, visa status etc in order to give a good ranking. Thanks for your valuable time and consideration.

Blessings and Grace to The Beauty of the World's Best!! 1. After selection based on scores, Directors then use School or origin or country. 2. The Personal Statement is NOT looked at until AFTER you are chosen for interview. THe personal statement can say almost anything as long as it is written correctly. the personal statement does NOT get you the interview. 3. The Rank order list is made from grades established after the interview accounting for all the details mentioned here. School, scores, VISA. The rank list also takes into account research experience and a grade for the interview. The rank list is more exhasutive in analysis. The program director may have a committee, or may just choose themselves. This is the MOST subjective part. 4. If you are interviewed at a place you like, and they offer you a contract. take it. I wish you all well!! Remember this is the BEST year EVER to enter training . We have NEVER been able to do more, heal more , cure more. Shanti, Shanti, Shanti!! The Fisch!

Dear Dr. Fischer 1- If they ask: why do we need to take you insted of another applicant, and you have a low grade. What I'm suppose to answer? Thanks Thanks

If they ask: why do we need to take you insted of another applicant, and you have a low grade. What I'm suppose to answer? This is the answer "I did not do as well as I would have liked, I worked hard, but I should have worked harder. This grade does not reflect as much as I believe I have to offer this program. I can do better!" Persist! Warmly, The Fisch
