Just a burning question to ask. I had someone ask me about it on this forum, and many people e-mailed about it on another forum. I dont want to mislead people, so if anyone could provide advice, Id appreciate it.

As many of you are aware (from my constant reminders sticking out tongue), I worked as a medical assistant for 1.5 years in a medical practice. Although I was hired as a MEDICAL ASSISTANT, the position was moreso like an externship. Now, mind you, I had NO INSURANCE.......and technically I was supposed to carry out the scutwork eg basic histories, vitals, sugars, laboratory, etc. However, my boss (nurse practioner) told all the physicians there to use me like an extern. So I had ample opportunites for hands-on experience, including suturing, paps, h + p, etc.

On my CAF, I cited this as work experience, but explained that I had the opportunity to have hands on experience.

Ive had a few members ask me about this experience, and now I feel guilty......cause I dont want people to think this is USCE when it is not. Yes, I know it is better than nothing......but if someone like BBB or some of you geniouses could elaborate on this, Id appreciate it.

You were hired as a medial assistant. Use it. Flaunt it. It's daily clinical exposure to patients.

Thanks BBB. But is it USCE ? Im not speaking from my part, because I had clinical exposure to patients on a daily basis and I will "try" to flaunt it as thus. However, for the many inquiring minds that have asked me, is there any advantage to doing this over an observership or externship ? Is it considered by ranking members like yourself as clinical experience ? I wouldnt want to tell people to focus hard on getting an MA position when they could be looking for more traditional routes like an observership and/or externship.

it is a very good nodUSCE experience and will be a positive in your resume .It sure will bring good interviews

please do mention itnod what are u waiting for ???

So is it fair to advise someone to acquire a medical assistant position, because it would serve as USCE on their application form ? Or is more efficacious for them to use traditional routes eg observership ?

I would consider it as a very positive advantage .
it is indeed medical experience as you didnot work in a air plane industry or so. you can not work as an intern or a doctor so grab it and it is good , the only stronger position would be fellow , which is not that easy to get.
Good luck
