Hi,
Thanks for all the advice and help on this forum.
When program requirements mention "must have a J1" or when they write "we accept J1 visas" in both instances what do they mean? J1s are in any case managed by the ECFMG...so can you please throw some light on this?

They mean that they will do the paperwork on the program side to send to ECFMG to sponsor your visa. It's pretty clear.
