Dear BBB and friends out there:

I have 2 important questions. I know the former PD of the surgery program in a big university program in California. He offered me to show my credentials and recommend me to the PD of IM in that same university. I told him it would be nice and gave my CV and everything to him but back then I did not know that my chances of getting a PTAL (California letter) where slim since I am not a citizen or a GC holder and therefore i don't have a Social security Number. After finding out that a SSN is an almost or a total must for the PTAL I felt discouraged and decided to forget about california and applied elsewhere but didn't even tried to apply to any program there including the one I was recommended for.

To my huge surprise, I received an e-mail today from the PD himself telling me that he would like to meet me next week!!

1.- Do you guys think I should take this as an interview, even if I haven't even applied there? or what exactly would it be?

2.- Has anybody heard of someone being able to get a PTAL without a SSN or being able to get an SSN being an alien? or anyone has personally done that or being in a case like I am know?

what do you guys recommend I should do? I really need your advices. Now if fill sad because I think that even if I charm the PD I may not be taken as a serious candidate because I don't have the PTAL.

Thank you very much for your kind responses!!

GLO,

1. I would take that invitation as a serious interview...

2. I don“t know, there must be a way to get a SSN for the PTAL...

Anyone?...

People who cant get SSN can get a TIN (taxpayer identification number).Which is used in applications in place of SSN because it looks like SSN.

Hope this helps.

can i get a TIN on b1/b2 visa?

  #12

I guess you'll get TIN if you file tax returns (H1) or their spouses (H4) ..it is Tax Identification number. Best thing would be finding out the lawyer or the administartion people of the program in california. take care & GL - dear friend Glo...

I have applied for the California Letter and have many questions about the L5 form.
Does anyone from Mexico have the CA letter and if you do have it how did you formulate the L5 form?
PLEASE HELP

now they r not giving TIN unless and until u file taxes...earlier they used to give it as an id no....sooo...pls check if u r eligible fr one frm the IRS(internal Revenue Services) ALl the very best GLO....

it's easy to get a tax id number. But first you have to check if your visa allows you to have a work permit in this country. If you can get a work permit, then you can go to anyone who owns a small buisness, and they can hire you as a independent consultant. You hand them $600, and they cut you a check for $600, and you go to the IRS and ask for a tax payer ID number, so you can be a good little citizen and let them take their $150 cut.
