be careful with looking for this spot - you have to distinguish designated and nondesignated surgery preliminary spots. some programs have also their steps score cut off and graduation year cut off.

i think your scores are enough for prelim surg. just apply far and wide

i have not been through match yet but i do MPH at a big uni and i see a lot of people trying for this , so this is a cumulative knowledge i am spreading here i think for prelim surg 50 prog with your scores are well enough but if it would not jeopardize my meals and still keeps a roof above my head; i would apply to 20-30 more , just in case, to be on safer side. plus i already presume that you have done enough research and applied to programs where your visa requirements and img status are not a problem. If these 50 programs are scrutinized in that manner, i think you won't have much of a prob. best of luck!!

As for scrambling , it's complicated. like say There are quite a lot prelim spot empty after match each year in GS , but you still need some back up for getting in to scramble , because it's a fast process and if you alone are trying it's mostly not gonna work out. If some known doc or someone within the system is trying to help you in scramble it's really helpful , but being an img , needing visa and trying to scramble on all your own can be a risky affair. we don't have our deans/faculties here making calls on our behalf [ and from where i come, thats a plus point ,because they won't do it anyway!!!] like American grads so i suggest you better get inside proper match only and if your luck runs out just try making a small team of couple of friends to call for you on scramble day so that you can reach as many programs as possible within the short time available and increase your chances of getting a deal.

vras i am applying to programs only after extensive research ( visa and score requirements ) and also , if they inform me of that, if previously IMGs have been accepted. So hopefully i wont be applying to any program which is grossly not for me ( like ones which dont sponsor visa at all) Hopefully I have applied to the right ones. do u know from where i can get a list of prelim sx programs which went unfilled last year? thx a lot for your reply

one more q. When i send LORs, and some require 3....is it advisable to send 1 surg , 1 med and 1 rads? or do i need to send 2 surg + 1 med/rads? currently I just have 1 surg LOR, though i can obtain 1 more from my med school, sending it now to ERAS will make it a pretty late. or shld i assign just 2 LOrs for now..and when they upload the third I shld assign that one.

about the unmatched prelim positions they are made available to people who do not match and are scrambling. so it'd be advisable to find and ask someone who has done scramble in last year's match. he/she might still have the list. About the LoR , I don't know much about it so I can't advise. May be you can start another thread and ask people who have been through it.

designated= kinda reserved for ppl who will go further into specialties known already...like reserved for neurosx, anaes, etc etc. nondesig= u can do PGY2 in whatever u want, they arent reserved in short
