pts peripheral blood smear showing schistocytes , helmet shaped cells ,decreased platelets .He had met with an automobile accident 3 days back and was admitted to ICU.The findings suggest............?

Its DIC....if helmet cells + schistocytes+ decreased platelets on peripheral smear....always think about DIC.

The diagnosis can be confirmed by measuring D-dimer

thank you! I never heard of it, but is it a syncronym we should know? What does "D" stand for?

we should know the clinical significane of D_Dimer test. it is used to determine the consumption of coagulation cascade. increased level are correlated with pulmonary embolism( most common utility) and DIC.i am not sure about the exact mechanism of it.
