Research and Publications will NOT get you through PERIOD. I have 7 years of US research and 10 US pubs, >100 citations, numerous awards yada yada yada.....unless the PD gets your app there is no chance the secretary will even read your achievements. Her goal is to reduce the pile of apps from 3000 to about 120 (based on scores, year of grad etc etc)....which are then sent to the PD.....he then sorts it out into two piles....AMGs and IMGs......the IMGs get divided into two more piles....Visa req non visa.....and so on and so forth. If you are in the last pile at the end of the table....sayonara....it gets put in the storage for three years. I have seen this happen in the place I worked at personally its not really a big secret anyways. ALWAYS BUILD CONTACTS....IF YOU HAVE CONTACTS YOU DONT NEED ANYTHING ON YOUR CAF....OTHERWISE....YEAH 99/99 MIGHT HELP U TO GET IVs.

Got reject from UAB.....Doc you and I seem to be dopplegangers.....no IVs yet. Ho hum....looks like I might have to wait next year.....I dont think I am gonna do FM under AnY circumstances....

Hi, waitingforiv,

I have very similar situation like you. I think long graduation year is the biggest negative point unless you have 99. As you said, i want to stick on Neuro too. We praobaly need more patience. Are you a Japaness? Why soyonara?

I agree with doc holliday!...Although i love neurology and getting it would be a dream come true, i simply cannot even think about remaining unmatched this year (Godforbid). I dont care which specialty(i have applied IM, FM, PSYCH, Neuro) neither do i care about the place. I just need to get my foot in the door. Thats it!smiling face

  #130

No keppra...
No interviews for me yet.
Didn't apply to any back up field either because neurology was the reason I set out on the usmle path. Seriously thinking about psych though right now...
But Im thinking look at us, we are all pretty much on the same boat except for acne whose got 8 secret spots.
WaitingforIV, I understand your frustration. Gosh, if I had your bakground, I would think I'd be a shoo-in at least to the lesser tiered programs. Do keep hope. I honestly think you are a very qualified candidate---not that what I think matters of course. I also want to do neuroscience research and I actually applied to several scholarships but didnt make the final cut. I couldn't afford to pay the tuition so I just opted to go into US residency first. I dreamt of UCL in UK : )
Can you scramble for psych if you didnt apply to it? I really dont want to spend any more money on eras.

  #131

By the way, waitingforiv, can't you ask your colleagues to "recommend" you to a PD? Im almost sure that somebody in neurosci research knows a PD somewhere...good luck!

  #132

i think that we all will get some interviews eventually ... not all the neuro programs are that 'sought after' by AMGs .. at the moment all the rejections that we have are from places that don't need to invite IMGs cuz they can easily choose from all the AMGs that apply there .. another thing is that not all AMGs go to all the interviews that they get ... i think some of the programs will start inviting IMGs after they've scheduled all the AMGs that accept the invitation ..... so hang in there ! what is meant to be shall come to pass.. whatever we could've done, we've done and can't go back and change anything now .. so, might as well sit back, relax and enjoy all the free time that we have before we start our busy life as interns next june/july

good luck guys smiling facesmiling face

Hello all,
I just found this thread/forum today. i am so happy to see a forum like this. Up untill now i was at places where they mostly discussed IM,FM,Pysch. I just wanted to introduce myself to all you who are already here in this thread and say hello to you all and start/continue the interview trail with you. To start, my credentials are 97/95/certified/4 mo USCE/3 mo Research ( am not sure if i can call that an experience, just hanging and helping some researchers in Neuro dept)/2006 grad/ NEED VISA/1 US LOR/. I just applied last friday as my documents were not uploaded and US LOR was also not uploaded till this monday. Currently, i have 2 IV from Buffalo, Henry Ford. 1 rejection from Maryland and 2 acknowledgements from Utah and Wisconson.
Just wanted to ask what is a decent number of programs that i should be applying? I have seen my friends applying for almost 100 programs in each speciality like IM,FM, Pysch. I know there are not many programs in neurology compared to them but i just wanted to ask you what would be a decent number. Thanks and good luck to you all of you.

Doc Holiday,
Henry Ford sponsors J visa. But u will also have to apply for transitional year seperately.

  #136

Doc,

Really appreciate your spirit. Good luck for all of us.

  #137

Hey sunmatch welcome to the forum here, and congrats for your two Ivs, I got one from Buffalo too did u schedule the iv there, and when was ur aplication at henry ford downloaded, I didnt hear anything from them, how many prelim progs have u applied to,

  #138

to Honeysuckle, thx for refreshing words dude, we all need support , this forum is so good as compare to others, lets keep it roking

  #139

Hi keppra,
Thank you.No i have not yet scheduled there. i emailed the coordinator asking for some date in November but she has not yet responded to my emails. I am thinking of writing back to the PD. I emailed the coordnator because that was what the inviation asked me to do. What about u? were u able to schedule a date with them? Regarding Ford, My application was donloaded on this monday sep 24.
Hope this helps and good luck to you

  #140

Keppra again,
I have not applied to any prelim positions yet....I have actually applied to IM categorical...So i am currently double checking and am trying to come up with some Transitional year programs. How about you?

  #141

thx for reply, ya I have applied to few prelim med progs, not heard anything back, I have also applied to quiet alot categotrical progs and havent got any calls from IM, I am afraid that my neurology LORS that I gave in IM are backfiring me, bcoz people with my socres are getting many calls in categ IM, did u get any calls in IM
reg; bufalo she didnt reply to my email also, so still waiting.

  #142

congrats on the ivs---i wish i applied to buffalo...i scrapped it off my list just because i prioritized others...
oh well, nicely said, doc...we did what we could...
i just wished i had even just *one* so i can breathe a little more...heeheehee...oh well, good things come to those who wait!

  #143

Honeysuckle I heard that neurology interviews usually start coming in oct start, so we have time still and did u get any calls in IM

  #144

nope, no alls at all.
i didnt apply to IM categ, either...so if im not getting the neuro calls, im not getting calls...: ( : ( : ( cross those fingers!
i really didnt think it would be this tough or that neuro would be this popular...oh well, here's hoping we all find our place. I mean, i know were competing against each other but i sincerely hope we all find slots that are right for each of us. anyone going through what we do certainly deserves it, right? GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

  #145

Just got a rejection from Indiana. No IV's yet for IM categorical either

  #146

Actually thats is what I keep harping about CONTACTS....and thats what I have been trying to do in the past year. Yes my bosses did recommend me to people but so far those places havent started IVs yet.....Unfortunately for me I have worked in places that can be considered Ivy league or top 10 medical schools so there is no way I can get in there....good for research BAD for me sad

But then maybe I might get lucky. Hope is the wind in life's sails. gringrin

Doc and Sarika i understand your point of view too and I think I may eventually end up accepting an IM/FM/Psych next year if I dont match this year....I have my cushy research job right now and am doing well there so waiting a year more will not affect me a lot.....I have waited 7 long years.....drop in the ocean...
