Thanks King! You explained the match algorithm quite well but I agree with Doc, rank it accdg to your preference. I got an invite from LIJ but cannot make the interview schedule since it is already in January and I am going home December Tufts...ever heard from Tufts? Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

honesuckle, I have not heard anything from Tufts as well. If you are not the one they are looking for. Why bother to be depressed. Work on something you like and they like.

Welcome back Kingsofke....It is very encouraging to hear from you. ckevin- Yes, i agree we should start to talk about interview experiences (May be not specific). Also it would be a great help if you we can share interview logistics also because most of the programs even university programs are not offering any accommodation. May be some simple insights can help very much. And yes the interviews are still coming. I talked to a few medical students who are also applying for neuro programs and what i get from the conversations with them is that most of them have around 15-20 neuro calls and they will only attend 8-10 or at the most 12 interviews. Hopefully thier cancellations can lead to some calls for others. Good luck all.

First, have a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. One more question, if next year, I can match with an advanced Neurology program, but do not match with an preliminary IM program, what happen? The advanced Neurology program will cancel the match? Such thing happen every year that applicants get specialty program interviews, but without any preliminary IM interview. Your information will be appreciated!

ultimately if you don't get match in prelim they withdraw you from the advance neurology but I haven't see a case so far. there are a lot of unfilled prelim positions in post match.... let's worry about this later , happy thanksgiving...

Hey ckevin and highhopes I actually discussed this with a PD in neurology interview. His awnser was that its unlikely but if it dose happen then there are many seats in post match and for prelim they will love to take any one matched in advanced and program itself tries to make a seat for you or catch a seat for you from somewhere else. I have a question, has anybody who interviewed at Kansas university , kansas citty got any letter from the PD recently, or from any other program for that matter. I just want to know that is it a routine letter or is it given to some candidates. It is a very detailed letter saying in summary that they like me and hope to see me 2009 (last sentence).

Hi, Kingsofke, thank you very much for your reply. You always offer very useful, reliable information. For the letter Kansas University PD sent to you, I believe that is a very good sign, and Kansas will rank you very high. A routine letter never be detailed. It doesn't seem that PD will send a long letter to every candidate. I also got an interview from Kansas University, but will do it lately. If it is a routine (unlikely), and I get a very similar letter after the interview, I will let you knoe. Good luck!

This weekend i was trying to familiarize myself with how NRMP match works and i could not understand this: SCENARIO: Lets say if some MATCHES for an advanced program and DOES NOT MATCH for a Prelim program. Obviously he/she would try to work out something in the scramble/postmatch. From the earlier postings i understand that generally in these situations the program tries to help the candidate get into some prelim position. But my question is when would they start working for this?? MARCH 12: You have matched in advanced and not in prelim MARCH 13: Scramble Day (Post match Day) you will know where prelim spots are unfilled at about 12:00 Noon and most likely within 1-2 hours all the spots are filled. MARCH 14: This day you will know where you have matched in the advanced program. My concern is wont March 14 be too late for the program where you matched to help you with a prelim spot? Am i missing something here? Your thoughts please.

i remember that last year most of the unfilled prelim spots that i called were looking for people who already had an advanced position in hand .. also, one of my friends had some contacts in one of the prelim programs and he couldnt get in cuz a PD called for one of his applicants who didnt get a prelim spot and they gave it to him ..

Looks like the prelim spots do not fill like the other categorical spots in a matter of 1-2 hours. I think one can try for oneself as soon as the availability of prelim spots is known but in order for the PD's to step in for recommending i think the prelim spots should last till the next day until everyone known where they have matched for the advanced positions.

Its even more complicated for us because the American graduates and PDs as well as Deans get the list of unfilled positions a day in advance and usually by the time we lowly IMGs get to know of the availability they have been already "promised" as favors to deans and PDs or just the lazy AMGs who were "late" in submitting their apps etc etc....the seat numbers are released only as a matter of formality.....so that they dont appear to be "discriminatory"....lol....so for the IMGs I would better wrangle the prelim BEFORE the match date...otherwise you can be in a deep pickle so to speak.

Well...Then i guess the best case scenario if you dont match for a prelim to pray and hope that some prelim spots be available in the same hospital/program or their affiliate hospital/programs and hope the neuro program PD recommends

Guys i need your input now. I have been offered a prematch by a program for the preliminary IM position. Here are the facts: Program is OK, not very good but i can spend an year that without regretting. I have 3 advance neuro seats. One more will probably be ok to take me as an advance candidate (KU) although i would had to recheck and even one more (UT memphis) which i would only be sure after talking with them again. I am sure 2 of the programs will not take me as an advance candidate. The prelim is H1b and 3 advance neuro are H1b. I think i can survive the blow of not being matched in advance and can do efforts in next match if needed. (better yet that will be on my own earned money). so what do you say guys, say your heart out. I have been fortunate enough to secure a 2 weeks decision time from them.

Kingsofke....Congrats!!...I think you should take the prelim spot. Since it is a H1b program and already almost of 5 out of your 7 programs are going to be ok with it. You should grab this offer. Also in the coming months you might still get calls for advanced neuro programs and all this will ONLY increase your chances. I think this is definitely a win-win situation for you. I think you should only be hesitant in accepting this offer only if the 2 categorical programs are your TOP choices and you badly want to fancy your chances with them. Do talk to all the programs you have applied and see what their response would be. ANyway congrats. Will see what others have to say. Just my thoughts. Good luck.

I would go for it! the bird in hand is better than 2 in the bush .. or whatever they say it .. nyways .. i would go for it and i dont think it should make a difference to any of the advance programs .. it might have a positive effect on them but no negatives that i can think of .. as far as the categorical ones are concerned its between you and the program ..
