Hi all. I have been reading all forums on this site for a long time. I gained lots of knowledge and tips i thank all for waht you do. I thought i share my exam exp. I finally took my exam yesterday.
Here is my exp, i hope it will benefit someone. I will go straight to the exam. For me the first 3 blocks were walkable, i mean i could do about 40 questions per block fairly easily, the other 10 had 2 very similar answers and had to guess. I had my break after 3 blocks. All 3 blocks were loaded with patho and BS. Guys make sure you understand all the BS concepts- Dr-patient relationships, ethics were heavily tested in about 4 blocks. I prayed they would give more of those ones as they were very easy. One mean calculation which they too took straight from UW. No PPV, NPV, OR, SEN/SPEC at all in my exam, i was relieved by that, because i hate calculations. Patho was key in all other blocks, basic medical conditions; angina, HTN, RA, Immu, and lost of CTs, 2 chest Xrays, lots of slides (liver & kidney) they love alcoholic liver diseases, so know that area well. Dont forget common things like COPD, CF. Most questions asked the diagnosis or mechanism of disease. A few leukamia questions, spherocytosis, TTP, DIC. Apart from patho , the next domineering questions were from Micro (UTI, dairrhea, PID, chest infections, childhood inf, pneumonias etc) know this area very well, because the questions never stopped coming on my exam. And they asked aon area at times 5 times eg UTI questions were about 8 or so, pneumonia - community acquired, mostly invoving patients with debilating diseases already, ie and HIV pt with a cough. No immun HIV questions, a 3 qs on SCID, Buttons.
Biochem was bad news for me, only about 10 qs on enzyme def - the rest were DNA experiments-like and some of the names they uised i never saw them in my prep, totally out of the blue, so i just clicked on moved on.
Yes dematology was there too - common skin sfuff leading to malig, pics in Gorjans BK brilliant, look them a day the exam. Lots of cultures of bugs : BV, TV and the drugs for Rx. Pharm was very easy stuff. Again know common stuff- onco drugs and were they work in the cell cycle, arrthymias and effect on action potential(know this!), NSAIDS, FA is enough!. A few qs on G-proteins but not very difficult. Lots of diags on physiological relationships. i could work the answer easily in some questions. they take time to analyse, lots of graphs too, various enzymes in table-form, few genetics, 2 pedegree, had to deduce mode of inheritance. Only 3 from embr, after spending lots of time on it! only 3 qs on nerve injuries! peritonial/radial/median. All head & spinal CTs- pick where lesion is, CN III was there. Go through HY - neuro CTs and know the common diseases - PD, Picks, and vascular distributions. Stroke qs.

So this is it guys. If i can do it again, i would definitely rely on FA, Fadem BS, Gorjans notes & book, BRS physio HY gross/neuro very handy and enough for this exam, lastly UW!! The qbank shapes you very well for patho, micro, BS, pharma, but biochem is far stretched on UW, i would stay with basics from FA or Gorjan.

Now its the long wait for me! remember nearly all qs were at clinical level. I had the advantage on that because i have been preop for step 2 same time (exam in 3 wks time). careful with the 2/3 step qs ie you are given the pt Hx, the drug Hx, and the q will be on complications of the drug So you have to make a correct diagnosis in yr mind, then know the drus for Rx, then side effect of that drug. infact they have tested you 3 times - on the patho/diag/pharma. dont forget cholesterol/TG they like that too with its complications biliary colic/liver disease/pancreatitis. Good luck to guys and keep on fighting. Ian average student , sitting my finals in Dec in MBBS, so if i can take the pressure you too can do it. Any qs welcome.

Congrat , you did the exm, seems did very well.

So far you are one of graduate that study both st 1, st 2 same time . Please tell how , is that beneficial to do in that fashion, since I was going to do that as study st 1, 2 then go for exm one after another . But switch gear to st 1 only study after 1st run through of both together .

Congrat, thanks for detail exm experinces .

I found it useful to do step 1 & 2 together. here is how I did it. I used to read say CVS physio, then went on to read step CVS clinicals in Board & wards or secret or FA step 2. i did that for all units resp, neuro etc. that i condensed all the info and i could see the link between the sciences and the clinical presentation. i did same trick with micro then read step2 infectious diseases. the last month or so i only did UW in tutor mode and wrote bullet points. micro, patho & pharma in UW worth the money. 4 days before the exam, you believe this, i did HY gross/neuro/embryo/BS 9 i mean serious reading for at least 12 hrs/per followed by UW. that way i went for the exam bubbling in those topics.
as i have already step 2, i am only doing UW IM will do paeds/surgery/obs last week. by the way when i did BS i also did step 2 pysch. it worked for me , may be different for others. stay focused you will be fine.

Acchoo
about my prep, one thing i learnt was that each time i read these forums, someone would recommend a book and would immediately buy from amazon. that was a very bad approach as i later realised because i ended with so many books to be read and i was in panic mode because i felt guilty at touching a particular book.
so in the end i stuck to FA, my UW notes, Gorjan notes & Review book which is amazing for patho, HY gross/neuro I used days before exam, BRS physio & BS. Asy you have seen no Biochem/genetics book through out and in the exam i was barely asked on those too.
I diddnt kaplan stuff at all but i was tempted to but the lot though! i also had FA step 1 Q & A only did the science parts to check my progress. In addition i had step2 FA, secrets, boards & wards.
i hope this works for me, will see the score when it comes. dont be let down by your score if doing UW its far too tough compared to the exam.its good as a learning tool.

thanks guys
keep to basics, nothing strange about the exam. i had many qs with 1/2 lines so finished 6 blocks with at least 6 mins to spare, the 7th block was a dead hit and the most challenging. all pictures were of good quality. keep on fighting!!
