How many sex chromosomes does a person with a trisomic anomaly have

A. one

B. two

C. three

D. either one or three

E. either two or three

  #2

two

  #3

I agree

i think the answer is E:2 or 3
trisomy can be autosomal or may involve sex chromosomes....
so it can be either more than 2 sex chromosomes
or 2 sex chromosomes and extra chromosome for any other autosome,
in which case the karyotype would be :
47XX +21.......for a female with trisomy of chromosome 21.....
47XY+13........for a male with patau syndrome.........
or in case of sex chromosome it would be 47XXX...or 47XYY.......

I think the answer is "B" or two.

47 XXY or XYY are not trisomies if I understand correctly....please correct me if I misunderstood :|

From FA 2003, pg 236-37

47 XXY is true hermaphrodite (where both ovarian and testicular tissue is present in the same person, with ambiguous genitalia) or Klinefelter's = a male with testicular atrophy, gynecomastia, gemale hair distribution, barr bodies, etc...

47 XYY is Double Y male (very tall, severe acne, antisocial behavior [not sure if this last fact has been proven, but true if it appears on step I]

u r correct quinn..somy refers to somatic chromosmes.. doesnot include sex chromosomes

  #8

correct
i was confused bz the aswer was 3;after i searched a little i decided the answer was wrong.

  #9

here the answer is 2 (since 47xx+21 or 47 xy+ 21 is trisomy)

8) Right usmleasr. I guess I should rephrase what I said. That was basically my point ..."you do not include sex chromosomes...X or Y...when talking about trisomies. That is why the answer is two...or "b"...the sex chromosome number does not change in trisomy. The conditions that I mentioned above are situation in which the sex chromosome number would change.

Hey guys....hope that you don't mind me dropping in on your study sessions. 8) That was a good question.

I agree with the answer that in trisomy the sex chromosome would still be 2.If the question was triploidy then the answer would be 3 right?

  #12

Triploidy would mean three sets of chromosomes and so yes, there would be three sex chromosomes.

Thanks once again Sakaki(you had answered one of my physiology doubts earlier too)

You're welcome. wink
