That means visa will be sponsored by ECFMG which quite a lot of programs use.

how does the 'visa sponsored by ecfmg' work?

does it apply to only j1? or both j1 and h1?

and how easy is it to get? does ecfmg sponsor for everyone that asks? or just for select candidates?

thanks

ECFMG sponsors J1 only no H1. It is given to every candidate whose hospital request for it. Most of the J1 giving hospitals use ECFMG sponsor (or probably all J1 are ECFMG, not sure) because J1 is a student exchange visitor visa. ECFMG will not object on any one to give J1 though there will be a sometime long and sometime tiring process.

When a program says no J1 then it says i dont care if ECFMG sponsors for you, i wont take you, (thats how interpret it though may not be technically right as i dont think they can obviously refuse on visa and nationality basis).

thanks, kingsofke.

i know that some progs do sponsor J1. some say that they accept if it's ecfmg sponsored[which as you said means that they will not be sponsoring it, so you gotta look out for yourself].

good luck to all!!

Well, be careful with the J1 visa. When a J1 visa is issued, there is a catch. At the end of your program, I believe, you will need to leave the US and not allowed to come back for a limited time. This is to assure that you are also serving in your country. I am sure there are some work-arounds of the situation. But if you can, avoid J1 and go for programs issuing H1 or other visas.

yes, eturan, the duration is 2 yrs. and the most commonly used method to get around it is by the j1 waiver.

i believe that the j1 is the worst and most restrictive of the visas on which you can enter the us. that's why most other students go on f1, which is a lot more flexible. of course, for doctors, there is no other option apart from j1 and h1.

good luck, guys. go for the h1.
