Dear BBB,

I am curious to know how exactly programs select their candidates for interview. I know you won't generalize but it'll be helpful if you could tell us how exactly it works in your program. I am sorry if I am repeating this question.

Do you download the material from all the applicants? What if you get 1000 applications? Will you read all 1000 CVs?? Do you use a screening software to separate the applications that satisfy your requirements? If yes what criteria will you be using, is it the same criteria given on program website? Do programs use a stagewise selection?...meaning do you first download 99/99 with USCE...and then 98/99...so on?

For example, lets consider a highly competitive program. Their website tells us a criteria which is: Scores >80, research or USCE not required, IMGs can come on J1.

Though this is the criteria it is a fact that for the last many years not even a single IMG got into the program and that most of the candidates have scores >95.

So if an IMG candidate with 80+ scores, with no research/USCE apply to this program will they really consider him/her?

Thanks a lot!

Programs don't have a choice in what is downloaded. We get every document from every applicant or none (which is why a download tomorrow could take me 5-6 hours). I will scan through every application that I receive through ERAS - and last year it was 3911.

Programs can filter out lower scores, higher scores, year of graduation, LCME schools, international schools, applicants with a felony record, etc. Some use them heavily. Some don't.

I'll be reviewing the end of September.

SO if you put that on the system, then the system will only give you the list with those candidate?
And from those candidates you had to go over 3,900 shaking head

Thanks BBB.....

So programs do use filters and use a stagewise pattern to select candidates?

Started download at 7am

Ended download at 11am

Gave ERAS class to new coordinators in other departments

Received over 1200 applications this morning

Looked at about 30 out of curiousity. No, I don't remember any from last year.

Will really start reviewing later next week.....

When I start reviewing, I'll look at some of the criteria that the PD gives me. I'll look at years since graduation, what an applicant has been doing. I'll look at attempts on the USMLEs and if it's over what the PD mandates, they're out. If the applicant hasn't been clinically active over a number of years, again - out. I seldom read a personal statement, unless I am looking deeper in an application for more info.

This is just what MY PROGRAM DOES!! It's all dependent on the program.

My program received about 3800 applications last year - some received 5000 or more. So by the end of recruitment season, I am so going to need a vacation.

No, those are filters that can be run after we download. We have to download everything offered to us from ERAS, or we receive no files at all. It's not a pick and choose until after we download from ERAS. Then we filter.
