Employment Authorization Document (EAD), EAD card, known popularly as Work Permit, It is a document issued by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that provides its holder a legal right to work in the United States of America.

EAD is a work authorization as your green card is being processed. Once you receive the green card, EAD is obsolete. H1 is completely different type of visa. In other words, H1 may or may not turn into a green card, but EAD does. EAD is for those who are married to US citizens or legally allowed to work in the US as a part of Green card process. My few cents.

EAD is related to many immigration categories, but for the purpose of the residency application, two categories are relevant: if the applicant his/herself has applied for permanent residence (for some, but not all immigration categories, but that's a different discussion) or if the applicant spouse has applied for permanent residence. These people obviously don't need another kind of visa (J1 or H1B). H1B, when granted for a residency, cannot be transformed in green card/permanent residence, but at the end of the residency the holder of H1B is free to apply for a job that will give H1B and hopefully will also sponsor for permanent resident. This is the difference between H1B and J1, which does not give this freedom. If a resident is on J1, at the end of the residency will not be able to apply for a job unless that job gives a waiver fo two-year requirement. This means the person has to return to the country of origin for 2 years before applying for any kind of visa/immigration status. The waiver basically removes this requirement if the person works several years in that job/state.

I am right there with you HONEYDEW: 79/90/CS Passed 2001 Grad, 4 months Observership in IM ECFMG Certified Green Card 3 US Lors Do I have any chance of getting into a IM program? Looks like FM may not be as easy of a backup as I assumed. FM is hard to get as well, for IMGs.

seems the scene for visa requiring IMGs is grim . Majority of the members here don't require a visa, so obviously they would be preferred over the others, thats reall sad

If I were you, I would actually be very careful where I apply, because you may get refusals and start thinking something is wrong with you. With your credentials, applying to -let's say-second tier programs can actually hurt your chances. Besides, have you not been able, after the MPH, the fellowship and the publications, to develop relationships with residency programs of value in that geographic area? If you did not, I think you missed a fabulous boat, my friend.

Hi, Cap I understand what u mean and surely know some mediocre university programs would reject me(U.of Nevada called me last week to ask me whether or not I "really" want to apply their program...), but: 1. I want H1 visa. 2. Since I have already secured a future position for fellowship, I am now looking for a laid-back program to spend my residency, preferably a community program with University support. No need to go to a top-tier University. I have made up my mind as long as I can collect 35 interview chances, I ll withdraw from all other programs. Now 3 only.
