When you say to your peers that you are applying to psych they may think:
1. you are as mad as your patients
2. you got really bad scores so you are desesperate for a spot
3. you dont know what you are talking about

Programs directors know that, and during interviews they will investigate why you are interested in psych.

Any ideas?

A superb candidate as you are man saying that you are interested in psych will be enough buddy...
Psych people are more crazy than their own patients and that is a fact.. BTW no offense to anyone, but as anesthesia people (my field) are junkies psych people are weirdos... smiling face
hahaha just kidding bro

Thanks Mazinger
I can see that a lot of people glance this post but none write anything
I infere with that behavior that lots of them are applying for Psych but just as a backoff if they dont get into their desire specialty (IM the most likely).
If that apply to you, dear reader, dont do that!!! Believe in yourself and go straight in what you like. Leave Psych (and Family Medicine for the same matter) alone!!!

Hi!
well you are right....ppl do critisize you for having an interest in psych
I know that I am interested in psych n thts wht i wanna do, but i am facing criticism from my family and peers....thats why i was forced to apply in IM as well....coz i cant make up my mind....i knw tht i m more interested in psych than anything else...but every1 i talk to (including my close family members whose advice i value) tell me to think again!

Hey ujaala
I agree with GOGETA. GO for what you want, if u enjoy what u are doing u will feel that u even would pay them for let u do what u like...now imagine that they will actually paying u, amazing!!.
If u are not still sure, I would advice to read How to choose a residency, Anita Taylor.
your family appreciates u but they are not in your shoes, and they will not live ur life after they die.

I'm also very much interested in psychiatry and people and my family are against it. They believe if I wanted to get into p[sychiatry why I got great scores in USMLEs?!!
I didn't apply to any other field despite a lot of pressure to do that!

Hey Cuadrodo
If you have interest from inside of ur mind
while interviewing they themselves wil find out
no need of ACTING OUT

  #15

True, just trying to find what are attendings and interviewers expecting from us; and how to demonstrate your interest.

to everybody: read OldPsychDOc's opinions about IMGs and their presentation during interviews. What he is looking in applycations and stuff...
