kaplan IM book says "routine screening for DM should be considered only when patient exhibit risk for development of disease" but UW says "Fasting blood glucose measurement is now recommended test by ADA for type 2 DM screening. Screening is typically done in normal indivudials who are 45y and over. The test can be repeated every 3 year if there is no risk factors for development of type 2 DM". ????

Ok, I didn't know there was a specific screening test but I found some source that said... "On the basis of expert opinion, screening should be considered by health care providers at 3-year intervals beginning at age 45, particularly in those with BMI 25 kg/m2 The best screening test for diabetes, the fasting plasma glucose (FPG), is also a component of diagnostic testing" also they concluded Diabetes is frequently not diagnosed until complications appear, and approximately one-third of all people with diabetes may be undiagnosed. Although the burden of diabetes is well known, the natural history is well characterized, and there is good evidence for benefit from treating cases diagnosed through usual clinical care, there are no randomized trials demonstrating the benefits of early diagnosis through screening of asymptomatic individuals. Nevertheless, there is sufficient indirect evidence to justify opportunistic screening in a clinical setting of individuals at high risk. Also, clinicians should be vigilant in evaluating clinical presentations suggestive of diabetes http://care.diabetesjournals.org/cgi/content/full/27/suppl_1/s11?maxtoshow=&HITS=10&hits=10&RESULTFORMAT=&fulltext=screening+for+type+2+diabetes&searchid=1&FIRSTINDEX=0&sortspec=relevance&resourcetype=HWCIT#SEC7
