hi everyone......... i badly need advice at this stage so here r my statistics IMG from a top 5 school in India usmle step 1 - 192/ 78 (yes, it sucks), step 2- CS clear ECFMG certified takin step 3 in october 4 research publications, 2 as first author 2 research awards, other good stuff in resume 3 months US Clinical Experience (got 3 good letters, submitting 2/ program; 1 Chairman's letter from home school) i dream of a career in academics, so applying only to univ. or strong affiliates (total of 36 programs so far) i want honest opinion on whether my application shall be thrown to the waste bin without much attention, only bcos my step 1 score sucks im planning to take the step 3 seriously as well, can that score matter, specially if i can manage >90 (i know its tough), seeking honest opinion........pls comment btw, i graduated last year, have been doing the research alongwith an ad-hoc Junior Residency

I think reserach oriented programs will like your application cause of research esp if you are published in peer review journals. I think do keep some backup community programs for just in case although you have good chances for university program.

you won't pass most programs criteria, which are generally >80 or >85 on step 1 on their webpages, but probably higher in real life....I believe criteria for IMGs are higher than for AMG, so I would apply widely, from academic to strong and not so strong community ones. Agree with kingsofke, if publications are in peer-review journals, better chances. You never know if PDs are reading all the applications or simply chosing based on USMLEs/visas(hence apply to more programs...maybe 30% academic, 30-40% strong C, 30-40% soso Com. A good point is that is first attempt and you have a good step 2. The majority (gut feeling), including AMG, US-IMG, nonUS-IMG dream of a career in academics so the competition is tough on those ones including top Univ, medium rank Uni, low rank Univ, and strong Communities. (even for AMGs). You will probably meet American graduates in strong community programs. I hope that answers part of your Qs.
