i think whooping cough is characteristic of brodetella pertusis infection... as far as the rx goes 1.CROUP- if mild....just humidfied air..steam ..whatever if it gets severe....try recemic epinephrine with/without steroids......before we intubate...severre means.....stridor at rest....accessory muscles working...Pao2 falling..etc 2.whooping cough---any age/any immumization status/any stage of disease....."erythromycin -14 days" is DOC...note erythro doesnt affect paroxysmal stage duration......but it certainly helps decreasing spread.and clinical status.. plus give erythro to house hold contacts.....kids <6 months could get severe disease ...so hospitalise them...

Also the treatment for younger than 1 mo of age is Azythromycin and in infants the catarrhal period may manifest as apneic spells and respiratory distress.
