bbb,

In Latin American countries, people are registered with two surnames, one from father and the other one from the mother. For this reason, my medical school diploma as well as my ECFMG certificate and my passport and ID's have my name with both surnames. So my question is: in the ERAS application and all the forms we need to fill for the hospital and state licensure after we Match, should I fill my Last name with both surnames or only one (the paternal/main one)? Socially, I only use one last name.

What is your experience with IMG's that have 2 surnames?

Thanks.

Last Name: Gonzalez Feldman (He's Dr. Gonzalez) or Tapia Zegarra (Dr. Tapia)

Not a big deal.

bbb,

Thank you very much for your prompt response. My question was regarding filling the ERAS application and other forms we need to fill after the Match for hospitals and licensing; do we need to put both surnames?

Thanks.

I would use the name used in the medical diploma, to play safe.

Silenced, my diploma, passport and certificate have both surnames..., I also used both for ERAS and NRMP..., and I think for paperwork purposes we should use both and for social purpose just one like bbb posted

Both names - it will get figured out.

I understand your dilemma, I made the terrible mistake during my step 1 application to use just my father lastname (I though well it is america after all right? NOT!!!) rolling eyes and then I noticed that I needed to take my ID to the exam and it had to exactly match my name, I had to undergo a name change process 2 weeks before my exam!! and it happened when you had to take your orange permit....oh my!! it was a painful painful, stressfull process!!! I payed next morning delivery and all oh my!!! so deffinitely use both your last names for legal purposes of any type especially if you ID's and medical diplomma have it...I learned it the bad way!!! nod

Yes, this is exactly why I am asking; because here in the US, traditionally, people only have one last name. But I understand now.

So bottom line for people who have two surnames (especially Latin Americans) is:
For legal and paperwork purposes: use BOTH surnames
Socially and professionally: use only one surname or both IF you want

GLO MD, but how were you able to register at ECFMG using only one surname and get the application approved if your diploma has two surnames in the first place? I thought that if your name doesn't match the one in the medical diploma, your application gets rejected automatically.

Oh! that is because I did not had my medical diplomma, that was the first time ECFMG heard something about me... in fact I still don't have my diplomma, I just graduated this month that is why but I'm going to get it any minute now nod plus I got confused because the form just said: first name (s), middle name(s) and last name: as you can see it did not included an (s) in last name I remember clearly as it was yesterday but later on I discovered that it does not matter if it comes in plural or not you should put both and just leave a space between the two. I thought I was not going to make it that time jajaja well see you around silenced bye
