This may be an interesting topic. Im sure everyone is aware of the difference between Internal Medicine Categorical vs. Internal Medicine Primary Care. I have a friend in a university program that opted for the Primary Care route over the Categorical one. For one, he said that most programs have a smaller amount of residents in the PC program as opposed to the Cat., which some people like. Two, less competition for PC (can someone verify?) Anyways, Ive read that PC can restrict your fellowship opportunites, and is set up so you can practice right away eg. outpatient and hospitalist. My friend disagrees, and says that 17 of the 19 residents in his program matched for fellowships, including the likes of cardiology and gastro. So........whats the deal with "opportunities" and "future endeavors" when choosing between Cat. and PCare ?
