well you certainly have to be certified before you can start residency and because most programs do no want to take chances they want you to be certified by interview time... after 7 years your ecfmg-certificate expires, meaning you have to re-take all steps in order yo get re-certified and you definitely can't start resideny on an expired certificate. hope this helps

my real q is--- after one gets ECFMG certification, for how many years ECFMG certificate is valid for purpose of starting a residency? is it 7-year limit after passing first step or valid for certain more no. of years?
