The correct answer is A. Mallory bodies are eosinophilic cytoplasmic inclusions ("alcoholic hyaline") that are found in the largest numbers in alcoholic hepatitis. They were originally considered to be pathognomic of alcohol abuse, but have since been found (in much smaller numbers) in many other liver conditions. Alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency (choice B) involvement of the liver is characterized by periodic acid Schiff (PAS)-positive cytoplasmic granules in hepatocytes. Hepatitis A (choice C) and hepatitis B (choice D) infections are definitively established with serologic markers. In Wilson's disease (choice E), there is excess copper deposition in the liver.
