Hello,
Since it is unknown what will happen after preliminary year and whether you are going elsewhere after that, what would be the best visa for prelim year? If you take J1 for this year, that may mean that you get 2 year home residence requirement before you actually start residency training on a categorical spot. What do you think about that?

well, if you can a secure a categorical spot before the end of preliminary year, you can continue with your categorical until your training is finished.

As I know that can happen only if the categorical spot is in the same department. But what happens if you get the categorical somewhere else in other city? Is it still the same?
