Hi everyone,
I just got my electronic score report today and found out I passed! Thankgoodnes, and I am happy that I passed, however I passed with a low score (189). now I am very worried about residency. What are my chances of getting an OB/GYN residency if my scores are:
Step 1- 214 (2 attempts)
Step 2 - 189 (1 attempt)

I think surgery is out of the question now as that was my second choice.

I also wrote 2 NMBE exams prior to Step 2. My scores on those were 186 and 210. Just to give you guys an idea of correlation to the real score.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks!

Hi badseed,

While USMLE scores are important, it is your cumulative resume that determines your chances. I say this based on the fact that I was rooming with someone in Med School who scored exactly the pass marks on both Step 1 and Step 2 i.e. whatever the minumim score was. He had taken Step 1 SIX times but passed Step 2CS and CK on first attempt. He was a Foreign Med Grad from England, had some US Clerkships, and did one year's research at one of the top ten Hospitals in the US. He went on to Match with Dermatology...his first choice.

A cousin of mine from Jamaica passed Step 1 on 4th attempt with a low score, Step 2CK on first attempt with an even lower score, and Step 2 CS first attempt. He too did some US clerkships and worked as a Research guy in Gen Surg for a year at a very well known Hospital, and has since matched for Gen Surg.

Despite the scores on this forum, there are TONS of people out there with poor scores who get the specialities that they want. You might just have to do a little extra to compensate.

At any rate, OBGYN is thought to be a fairly easy Match (so I heard).

Thanks Neuroblastoma. I honestly couldn't have done it without the help of this forum and the words of encouragement of all you guys.

Rastaman: Thanks for your response. I guess just reading about all these high scores on this forum really makes me think I don't stand a chance. Thanks for letting me know about your friends. This leaves me with some hope.

Goodluck to both of you if you haven't written it yet and with the match!

No problem badseed. And your score is decent so don't even sweat it.

Just remember the bell-curve distribution of scores and you will realise that you are not on the tail end...

hello badseed,
really sorry about your score, but keep up the positive attitude and never give up. I've known people who have had multiple attempts and were still able to find residency positions in US. Be persistent and sharpen up your resume if you could. Good luck in future!

Hi Dr. Roh,

I scored 186 with NMBE 1 and 210 with NMBE 3. I had heard Form 3 was more equivalent to the real score. In my case it wasn't.

Goodluck to you all!
