A 16 yo is a minor. He does not enjoy the rights of adults. Need consent from parent or guardian.

well, considering the childs age, n teh clinical condition.. the parents have to be approached for any opinion on surgery.. however if the child is emancipated, then no surgery but tell him that if he changes his mind he can always come back and also tell him about teh other options for treatment that cud be there for reducing teh pain adn that can be given as symptomatic treatment... what do u guys think?

Agree, the 16 yo Pt himself is not entitled to make a decision... Ask parents, or obtain court order...

Next step in management: amputation should NOT be preformed. Adolescent patients or adults who are competent in making decisions have an absolute right to determine what shall be done with their own bodies. However, most pediatric patients are not competent to make their own decisions. Please remember, children (15 years or older) are usually able to give a genuinely informed consent. Therefore physicians may respond to their request, except in a case of irreversible sterilization

I think the answer of this Q is not based on age of the minor and it is mostly if he is emancipated or not. if this child lives along, we have not amputate his leg, but if he lives with his parents or guardian, we have to contact with them to get to consent. I think that the Q should be specified about that.
