4. An experimental drug is being tested as a potential therapeutic treatment for asthma. Preclinical studies have shown that this drug induces the relaxation of cultured porcine tracheal muscle cells precontracted with ACh. Which of the following mechanisms of action is most likely to induce this effect?

(A) decreased plasma membrane K+ permeability
(B) inhibition of the sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca++-ATPase
(C) Increased plasma membrane Na+ permeability
(D) Decreased affinity of troponin C for Ca2+
(E) Stimulatino of adenylate cyclise

E

Trachelis muscle is smooth muscle and contration is not through binding of troponin C and calcium. so D is false. A, B and C will cause action potential(increased Na permeability) or substain action potential ( decrease K permeability) or increase the time of contration (inhibition of calcium pump in SR).

increasing the adenylate cyclase is the same action as beta 2 adrenergic agonist and should produce muscular relaxation in trachea as in bronchioles.
