1. Malignant hyperthermia is potentially fatal genetic disorder characterized by a hyperresponsiveness to inhlaed anestehtics and results in elevated body temperature, skeletal muscle rigidity, and lactic acidosis. Which of the following molecular changes could account for these clinical manifestations?

(A) Inhibition of ryanodine receptor(B) Reduction in the density of voltage sensitive Na+ channels in the T tubule membrane
(C) Prolonged opening of the ryanodine receptor channel
(D) Decreased voltage sensitivity of the dihydropyridine receptor
(E) Enhanced activity of the sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase

C.)

the only answer which can produce muscle contration which can be seen as muscle rigidity clinically.

  #3

Yup ... C.

(A) Inhibition of ryanodine receptor -- no opening of ca channel on sarcoplasmic reticulum
(B) Reduction in the density of voltage sensitive Na+ channels in the T tubule membrane -- AP udn`t spread -- no contraction/rigidity
(C) Prolonged opening of the ryanodine receptor channel --- nod
(D) Decreased voltage sensitivity of the dihydropyridine receptor --- ud not help opening of ryanodine receptor channel
(E) Enhanced activity of the sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase -- rapid sequestration of Ca --- no rigidity
