Hello. I'm in the process of looking at hospitals and I was wondering how many programs do IMGs usually apply to? Thanks and good luck to you all... ___________________ If you come to a fork in the road, take it. -Yogi Berra

Ok...I'm told that most IMGs apply to at least 50 programs. Does that sound right to anyone?

ya imgs usually apply to about 50 to 150 programs depending on various things. but at an average people apply to about 60 places and 50 sounds good enough

it might also depend on how competitive u are?
I can't imagine an IMG with 99/99 applying to as many as 150 programs... and similarly I can't imagine an IMG with 78/79 applying to only 50 programs.

OK...first do your research. Why should you apply to a program that doesn't have any IMG on it. Then depends on how many specializations are you applying. I would say, 30-40 for each speciality is more than adequate.

For what I have read here and in other forums for each specialty at least 70 for your first pick, then you can select 50 for your second choice specialty. minimun overall at least 100 with low grades. ___________________ As a general rule, the better it felt when you said it, the more trouble it's going to get you into.

Do the programs get money from it? Or ERAS keep it all?

I'm only applying for 50, more then that seems to me like too over the top and wasting money like crazy but that is a matter of how confident your are with your application (if I had 75/75 or attempts I would probably apply to 100 I think) and also of how much money do you have...but I think this: if you have a strong application: i.e. high 90's and USCE, good LOR's go for 50-70 if your application is not very strong apply for 100, 150 seems like too much for me but as I said that is a personal matter. ___________________ Keep your eyes on the stars, but remember to keep your feet on the ground....Theodore Roosevelt

There is no magic number of how many program should you apply. BUT, why should I apply to a program that doesn't have IMG on it (first criteria for not applying to particular programs). Then, why should I apply to a program that asks for higher scores than mine (second criteria for not applying to particular programs). Then why should I apply to a program that ask for USCE, if I don't have one. So, you can find some more criteria to cut your list down. If you have extra money that you need to burn....fine, just give it a charity instead of paying applications to programs that you are 99% sure they won't invite you at all for an interview.
So, I think the lower your scores, the more carefull you will be in setting up your list of programs.

Minang is correct. I am not gonna apply to places that ask for like 1 yr USCE if I have only half that, that don't have IMGs in the their program or dont support VISAs. At the same time, I am also not going to apply to programs that have horrible reviews either. This kind of info is possible to figure out if you take the time to do your research.
