To the best of my knowledge, patients are always offered to choose from shockwave and endoscopic destruction of a stone that is larger 6 mm... In fact, the risk of kidney parenchima damage with a shockwave is higher than if precutaneous nephrostomia followed by mechanical stone destruction followed by stone fragment removal is performed. Open suregry is only for struvite stones, as mentioned above by doyoudig...
