Let's say that you are doing an elective abdominal surgery on a patient, and you find out that the person has some other finding that you need to do something about, for example an abscess, or a malignancy. What is the correct thing to do if a) the patient has no family members b) the patient has a spouse present c) the patient's adult child is present, or if the adult patient's parent is present I don't know the answer to this question, so I'm interested in people's opinions. Is it okay to just do the additional surgery in the first case or do you have to close the patient up, ask the patient's permission, and then schedule them for ANOTHER surgery to fix the other problem you found?

I think it depends on the case. If it can wait - ask the patient, otherwise cut it off...

If it is an abscess, go ahead & drain the abscess. If it is a malignancy you are suspecting, cllose the patient wake him up, take his consent & do the surgery.

i wud say patients consent is must for anything and everthing u do unless something is going to killl him if not treated in minutes..... if it is malignancy u cannot just operate patient right away ... u need to stage and grade it so see wat modality willl work best .... so i wud do biopsy after consent and than discuss further abt new problem with patient.... if it is small abcess and not life threatening wud close patient and after proper consent and explaining wud do drainage... if killing patient wud talk to patient on operating table itself abt it take a consent and drain it ...
