BBB or anybody has experience on this, I am just wondering, if it is appropriate to email PDs and tell them how enthusiastic i am about the program, etc., beyond the online application submission.

i am just wondering if this can earn some attention or just waste of time, i.e. PDs never look at this email or even worse, considered "bother or harass"?

any ideas? thanx

Why not? It won't harm you.

I'll tell you my experience with one PD....while he was checking his emails, i happened to be standing next to him. He had apparently got a bunch of such emails, some had even attached their CV. Without opening, he deleted them all at once. He said that such emails were very annoying and that he cant possibly help or even remember any of their names.
So i dont think it would help with this PD's like this one....but, even if it was harassing, he wouldnt remember the name.
On the other hand, there could be some PDs who really want to know the level of enthusiasm of his future resident.

i would say the only time such mails are opened if at all would be after you were interviewed. remember, PD's and PC's are human beings they get hundreds of emails daily during the match season. bbb will be able to give first hand information though.

Actually someone just recently told me its a good idea to "BE IN CONTACT WITH THE PROGRAM" you are applying. Logical question was how can you be in contact with 60+ programs. Moreover, how and why can they, the PC and PD remember you, just because you email them....and in rare case even if they do....they will only remember you as someone who emailed for nothing....In my view, only email when you have genuine questions to ask, even then show some sympathy and dont send 3 emails/ day. I just happened to speak with a PC face to face and boy was she annoyed by the emails. According to her "when everything is on the website, why would a person send email?" Although there are a few exceptions, some programs donot have info on the website and in that case its perfectly okay to email them. Hope it helps.

I HAVE E MAILED a lot of pediatric program co-ordinators. i fact i did it like this - got a list of all university and university affiliated prgrams from Freida, and e mailed each and every one of those programs using an e mailer program, in July. till now i have had programs replying to my mails. abt 60% responded. being an IMG, i found the response rates much higher than i expected them to be. most were polite, and replied like - there is all this info on the website, and then responded to my specific queries on some issues.

so i guess its sort of ok.

Waste of time? If just one PD or PC opens it and remembers you, is it a waste of time? No. Don't worry if it's a waste of my time - do what you need to do to get the residency of your dream.

Even if I consider it a waste of time, why would you let that stop you? Go for it. (Although don't use esteemed, renowned and highest caliber to describe yourself and my program. I read those out loud to the chagrin of my chief residents.)

Good luck
