Hi there!!

It's been a while since I posted on this excellent forum. There's not a forum for Fellowships so I decided to post here. I wanted to share and ask for more information on something I learned while doing a rotation at a very prestigious hospital in the U.S.. It turns out that the NIH (National Institutes of Health), which is the major source of funding for fellowship programs in the U.S., won't consider non immigrant foreigners (that means J-1 or H-1 holders) as elegible for fellowship funding!!! shocked. This is even clearly stated in many of the fellowship program websites, saying that to be elegible as an applicant you have to be either a U.S. citizen or green card holder, because of NIH regulations. I also know of a couple of my connationals who did their residencies in certain hospitals, who HAD to go to other hospitals for fellowship (meaning they couldn't stay even if all the attendings wanted them there)...just because all the funding came from NIH, making them inelegible. That sucks huh? and I was completely unaware of it before coming to the U.S. disapproval

Of course there are places that will accept foreigners for fellowships, but there are not many, and how do we know which are those places? Does anyone know of a webiste where we can have access to a list of this fellowship programs? Or do we have to ask each program for this information? confused

I will apply for a pediatric residency this year and I have started to look very carefully at programs with strong GI departments (the area I'm interested in), or even better, for programs with fellowships that will take foreigners. It might seem premature to worry about this before starting residency, but if you consider the fact that you have to apply for fellowship at the middle of your second year then it doesn't look so hastened.

Please if you have more info on this, or you feel I'm wrong (and have proof, of course hehehe) grin, please reply.

Thank you!! And good luck with your applications! nod

I don;t think you are wrong. But I guess the only way to know if a program sponsers visa or not is to visit their websites or search FREIDA.
eg. http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/medicine/gastroente...
