It is true that there are places that you actually learn a little, compare to other places.

2- That there are some community residency that people say ME going THERE no way, but actually are really good teaching and friendly.

3- The places that have no minimum qualifications do that means that they are not good placesconfused

4- The % of people that are more than 5 years old graduate, no USCE and low USMLE scores are ALOT, and for what I see there are little places that will at least give a interview with those qualifications, so that means they have a higher % of no matching?

gogeta,
1-yes there are certainly differences between the programs, look at their rotation-schedule, ask for board passing rates, what happens to the residents after graduating, ask them if they are happy, what they like, what they not so much like about their prg, try to get a feeling about the prg on your iv day.

2-definitly, like my program, i am so glad that i was picked by this prg, after 1 and a half month for me its the best prg i can imagine. man, they're sending us to national conferences after just 3 months. but it's a shitty town where nobody would want to live voluntarily. but not for me!

3- i dont know, but i dont think so. in my prg there are people with not so good scores and they are great doctors and wonderful guys to work with.

4-i think thats true. though pd's look for the 'whole-package'. but low scores, old grad and no usce are of course a disatvantage. write a great ps, try to highlight your strong points in your cv, good LOR's..., do well in your IV no matter how many you get. people with just one iv match.

Dear GOGETA:

I think there are other aspects to be considered. For example, the states that are popular among us, immigrants, are the ones with good weather, closer to ours, and that already received a good number of our people. Then we don't feel alone and have someone to count on in an emergency (hopefully). There are states, like Florida, in which speaking Spanish is a plus, because some patients don't speak English at all. There are some recent graduates that are young and single and want to live in a city where they can have a social life (if possible). Some people would avoid long months of winter, there's a risk of getting depressed during them, and they simply don't like it.

So, sometimes it's not that the program is bad, or has bad staff or low probability of good learning. Sometimes is geographically challenged. Sometimes is not very famous. Sometimes the city where it is located is dull for someone who wants to party whenever there is a chance.

People who are not recent graduated, 99/99/99/pass first attempt, "Harvard material" need to have an open mind, research the programs and try and be the best, wherever they are accepted. At the botton end, the books and information are the same everywhere, the patients are there for us to cherish and treat and learn with, and who's competent is competent, no matter what is being served in a tray, or what he had to spend a few hours figuring by himself. I think doctors are self teaching by nature. It's great to have good coaching, but it depends much more on yourself the quality of doctor you'll be.

I think an exception for all that is when somebody really wants to do research. Then he should go to a institution that has tradition in research. Sometimes convincing very busy doctors of the importance of it when they are not interested is simply a waste of time, and it may get very frustrating.
