Pt presents with urinary frequency, urgency, burning upon urination. No fever. Bacteruria! What would you prescribe: A)Ampicillin B)Cephalexin C)Ofloxasin D) SMX-TMP Also, can someone point out the difference between UTI and pyelonephritis, cystitis. Because I was under the impression that pyelonephritis and cystitis are considered UTI, just the source of the infection is different...pyelonephritis (kidney) and cystitis (bladder).

Thnx asmi for the article. As for the question, I probably should have added another important point. This drug is not given with Antacids because it doesn't have the same bioavailability as when given alone. Changed your mind about your answer now? By the way, SMX-TMP was my original choice and I got it wrong because I didn't read carefully that this was a simple case of UTI. For simple cases, only SMX is used; whereas TMP-SMX is used for recurrent UTI infections. And also, I ignored the Antacid deal.
