 The thyroid scan (usually a stationary scintillation camera) after ingestion of radioactive iodide (Technetium 99m can also be used) will show if the nodule has increased function ("hot") or decreased function ("cold") relative to the remainder of the gland. Almost all of malignant nodules are hypofunctioning ("cold"), however appx 80% of benign nodules are also "cold". Functioning nodules (hot nodules), particularly if they are the sole functioning tissue, are rarely malignant.
