how do first cousins share 1/8 of genes?
in cant figure it out ,
first generation-grand father/grand mother
2nd generation-mother/uncle-----share half their genes
third generations-first cousins-------share 1/4 of genes
am i thinking right?confused

I am trying figure it out too,good thing you brought it up-
[if mistake some one please correct it]

first generation-grand father/grand mother
[1/2];[1/2]would be transmitted to children

2nd generation-mother marries someone outside family-----
[1/2grand father;1/2grand mother]mom;[1/2;1/2]new genes from pop

1/2mom's genes would go to cousin no.1=
1/2 x [1/2grand fatherx1/2grand mother]=1/2 x1/4=1/8

same would apply for cousin no.2 who would get genes in similar way from mom's sibling.
third generations-first cousins-------share 1/8th of genes

dont know whether I am right,
