Hello doctors,
Well I need to thank this site for all its efforts. The exam experiences of others helped me in choosing the right way.
I started my preparation on April 1 and took my exam on aug3. With a decent score of 240/99 I relaxed for couple of months and took my CS in march ending. Over all my preparation lasted for 4 months with job every day from 12 - 6 pm, not have to say, it was a hard walk!! I relished every bit of new information gained during this preparation.
I read kaplan books, did not watch any videos, but did 60% of Usmle World.. scoring around 60%. Did not do Kaplan Q bank.
I read Step2 Secrets, I advice everyone to read this book, especially those who have a problem understanding simple concepts. This sleek book has the material to get you a score of 90% !!! I read this books 10 days before my exam, read it for 5 days.
Last 10 days of preparation:
I took NBME 1, around 9 days before my exam and got 580 in it. I wasn't completely ready when I took this exam, I felt the exam was easy so started reading Step2 Secrets.
Than 5 days before exam, I took NBME2 and scored 540. The decrease in score made me shiver and realized the fact that Step 2 Secrets can get me only to 90 and not to 99 !!!
In the last 4 days I read kaplan books twice!! This I guess helped me a lot in the exam. Its very important to be good with your material.
In the exam hall:
I had to leave 1 Q unattempted in 1st block, and in rest of the blocks I was able to finish 2-3 minutes early, but its not enough to review your marked Q's. I guess everyone will have such a problem, its unavoidable.
The exam tests your understanding of diagnosis, ONLY KAPLAN NOTES and STEP2 SECRETS is ENOUGH. Usmle world will help you increasing your understanding and to manage your time.
My final words:
Read Step 2 secrets.
Kaplan books are enough ( 4 readings)
Sleep well before exam day.
Take NBME to know what the exam tests.
Be equally good in all subjects to get high scores!!
Hopefully I will score good even in my Step2 CK.

Sorry didnt read your post properly before.Congratulations for your step1 score!!! Thats wonderful....and preparing for ck while working thats incredible too!! Pls tell us more about your prepartions how did you manage to study with work . i am goin to have a baby soon and think your advice wud help me a lot.Thanks and Goodluck!!!

240/99 is my step1 score....

It is not how much you read, its how much you are understanding.... try to visualize what you read. For example say, when I read PROM/ PID .. I imagine my wife having it in front of my eyes and try to visualise things!! Planning is very important, " If we are not planning we are planning to fail !!! "

hi ea!
i took NBME form 1 today and got 580. same as you. wondering whats the best thing to do now with exactly 1 week left for the exam.
should i read kaplan first and then take form 2, or take form 2 at the earliest and then read?
have read kaplan text 2-3 times but not very confident. finished UW with 64% and almost done with qbank.
pls suggest.

Hi Rudolph,
You got a good score in NBME, congrats! I prefer reading text books over q banks... but it all depends on your way of doing things. If you already gave ur step1, than do what you did for step1. Do the way things work for you... listen to your past history!!

A decrease in score happened even to me for NBME2. Revise your material and do the most you can in the last few days. Give your best before exams... the best ever by you!! You will win!! Good luck.
