A 5-year-old girl is brought to the physician 30 minutes after being bitten on the forearm by her cat. Examination shows a small puncture wound covered with dried blood. She is at increased risk of infection for which of the following reasons? A) Arm wounds are more susceptible to infection B) Salivary enzymes in cats augment infection C) It is difficult to cleanse pathogens from this wound D) The Staphylococcus species involved is particularly virulent E) Young children are less able to resist infection than adults

I chose C Here is waht I got from vetmed.edu: Cats’ teeth are thin and sharp, so the wounds they cause are more likely to be puncture wounds. These wounds can reach into joints and bones and introduce bacteria deeply into the tissue. Puncture wounds are very difficult to clean, so a lot of bacteria may be left in the wound. Also, most cat bites are to the hand, which makes infection more likely. Dog bites often do more outright damage, but only 3 to 18 percent become infected. In contrast, cat bites may appear more trivial, but up to 80 percent of cat bites may become infected if proper care is not taken The most common bite-associated infection is caused by a bacterium called Pasteurella.

A) Arm wounds are more susceptible to infection - false B) Salivary enzymes in cats augment infection - salivary enzymes from the cat would inhibit infection C) It is difficult to cleanse pathogens from this wound - My answer my default; cat bite is deep, based off of article from here. http://www.emedicine.com/med/topic1764.htm D) The Staphylococcus species involved is particularly virulent - the infection would be pasturella, not staph E) Young children are less able to resist infection than adults - maybe if the kid was less then 6 months. But by 5 yr his/her immune system is intact.
