hi, everybody,
i am applying for some advanced programs, e.g. neurology; which means i have to apply for transitional yr; my question is if we should prepare a special PS and related LOR for transitional yr, or just use the same PS and LOR used for advanced programs? personally, i think we should use the same PS and LORs, since the goal of getting into transitional is for the advanced programs.
any suggestions? pls.
and good luck for everybody here

I recently happened to read the post on Studentdoctor.net

read this!

I used to be the resident that helped out with the transitional year ranking process. 3 out of 4 applicants just turned in their primary personal statement. However the ones that turned in a individualized personal statement for the PGY1 year really stood out in our eyes. We know that the PGY1 year is just a year to fill before residency. Still if you write an additional personal statement the image that it portrays is that you are serious enough for the program to take the time to write a personal statement for your 1st year.

We all know that you are a good test taker and strong clinically as evidenced by your 3rd year clinical grades. The one thing that concerned us is whether you will be motivated to do your job while you are here before you go off for radiology, derm etc. By writing a separate personal statement you portray the image that you are taking your 1st year seriously rather than turning in your rads personal statement that shows laziness.

First impressions are lasting impressions during the application process. Sure you will be given interviews based on Step 1, Grades, and Geography. But the ranking process is a different animal all together. The PD and the members of the ranking committee read all personal statements. If you really want to go to a certain program now is not the time to "appear" lazy because perceived image becomes reality.
