In a certain population of 1000 fruit flies, 640 have red eyes while the remainder have sepia eyes. The sepia eye trait is recessive to red eyes. How many individuals would you expect to be homozygous for red eye color? Hint: The first step is always to calculate q2! Start by determining the number of fruit flies that are homozygous recessive. Let's say p is the frequency of gene for red eye and q is for the sepia eye. In that p(red color gene) is the dominat gene and so both p2 and 2pq has the red colored eye. p2 + 2pq + q2 = 1.so 640/1000 + q2 = 1 and q2 = .36, then q is 0.6. so p is 0.4 and the homozygous red is p2 = 0.16 and the no. will be 160 out of 1000.
