What cardiac drug shows the following on an ECG: prolonged PR, short QT and depressed ST? Please give an explanation with your answer. I have the answer, but would like an explanation in simple words, please grin

Digitalis = Due to Inc AV Nodal Refractory period by blocking the Na/K ATPase pump which leads to increased activity of Na Ca pump activity.

Thanks, NNL. So, let me see if I got it. Blocking sodium will prolong the depolarization of the AP, and this correlates with the prolonged PR. The resulting increases in calcium, this is why we have the short QT and depressed ST?

Ok i will give my best shot to explain as i had understood do Correct me.

QT Interval =Ventricular Depolarization and Repolarization Right. the Effective Refractory period of the AV node is increased and the ERP of the Purkinje system is Increased i.e Depolarization and Repolarization occur faster owing to the Lesser Influx of K after Depolarization and the RMP resetting itself to the new K level

ST Depression = a downward deflection is noted on the ECG when the active electrode becomes negative. ST segment Tells us tht the Ventricles r repolarizing and the since the Potassium concerntration is decreased cells go more negative. thus having ST Depression and Flattened T waves.

I hope i m right

Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I feel so much better understanding vs memorizing. Both have their merits, but the former is better than the latter when it comes to not only step 1, but beyond smiling face

Nah, no tricks, I knew it was digitalis nod I knew the "What", I just wanted to know the "Why". Yes, I am a subscriber to that new philosophy--"Goljanology" grin

i m afraid guys i dont think the explanations right... digitalis doesnt nt inc erp by blocking the na k atpase pump....

To NNL
Review it again
ERP is Decreased by direct blocking Na/K Atpase pump
