hi BBB,

I have an important question. I have 2 years of USCE, but I just dont know where to put in ERAS application. Do I just list every clinical rotation in the ERAS under work experiences ?

Thank you for your help

The bottom line is that it doesn't matter where it goes as long as you mention it somewhere. You see instructions for ERAS that I don't see. Check your instructions again and then determine where it fits best.
Good luck

Remember ERAS says:

Include Clinical and Teaching experience as work experiences, include all unpaid extra-curricular activities and committees you have served on as volunteer experiences.

UCSE is a clinical experience, and any unpaid extracurricular work is a voluntary experience... Even if a clinical experinece is unpaid like Observership I will include it in Work experience and not a voluntary experience. Cos ERAS clearly states that voluntary experience is unpaid EXTRACURRICULAR,, and USCE is not extracurricular........ Got it!

it depends, intern_doc....were you observing or doing an externship. accordingly the position will be observer or extern.

however i am still unsure of how one can list an "observership" under "WORK" experience? is observing, work? it would be work for our own reasons...which means its voluntary right? plz correct me

drk1980,

Sorry, maybe I was being unclear. I did 2 years of clinical rotation (NOT observerhip/externship). This is hand on, doing from h&p,pap, sutering, surgery,pt follow up, everything w/the doctors.

Do we include clerkships and electives that were done in the US as well? And put our position as "student"?

i am confused... i did observership in a hospital which was via volunteer services ... where do i include this ...work experience or volunteer service... i will be highly grateful if somebody helps me out...

See, I am trying to follow what ERAS says. According to ERAS all EXTRACURRICULAR unpaid activities are to be included in Voluntary section. Is observership EXTRACURRICULAR?? I would say NO, its not! ERAS also states all clinical activities to be included in Work, just because Observership is unpaid doesnt mean it is a voluntary work.

Its definitely a debatable thing. But I have put forth my opinion here!

Clerkships in US medical education system are considered a part of medical education, Had I been you I wud have put it in Medical education section.

@priya...

observership is volunteer work..its not clinical work..

u can do observerships even if you are in 10th grade or not going to school..

it goes under volunter as it is unpaid and not clinical...yes its not clincal..

yes observership is extracurricular....

obsevership is not a part of any medical education board cirriculum ( US or international)..

externship/clerkship may be or is a part of medical education i.e. cirrculum

please dont get me wrong, i am just trying to help...i had done both observership and externship and when i was going thru the paper work for these things i reliased the techincal difference, you may differ my opinon and may choose to write about observership in the CAF where you feel comfortable..

well I had a long discussion about this with my friends too, many of them(who matched last year) said work experience and a few others said voluntary... so as I said before its debatable!

The Conclusion is: REMEMBER TO PUT IT SOMEWHERE IN YOUR APPLICATION(work or voluntary)...

hey intern_doc I am not really sure what to put in the position may be an "INTERN" cos u did all those things which an intern does right? .... Thats a guess, not completely sure.

priya, azygous, thanks for trying to clarify. after some thought, i have considered putting observership under volunteer experience. and the only reason is because, like it was pointed out, it is unpaid and definitely out of an academic curriculum.
But if I go by the definition of volunteer experience (service offered for the benefit of the community)...again observership doesnt fit! so it really doesnt matter, i guess. we shd just put it SOMEWHERE.

intern_doc, it sounds like you were most probably an intern or extern. dont know the exact difference.
