A 35-year-old man is referred to the renal clinic for evaluation of proteinuria. He has no complaints other than foamy urine. The following data are obtained from the patient: Inulin clearance 100 mL/min Plasma osmolarity 286 mOsm/L Plasma sodium concentration 140 mEq/L Urine flow 1.44 L / 24 hour Urine osmolarity 205 mOsm/L Urine sodium concentration 100 mEq/L How much sodium does this patient reabsorb each day? A. 14 mEq B. 144 mEq C. 244 mEq D. 20,016 mEq E. 20,160 mEq

Inulin clearance 100 mL/min-LOW Inulin clearance Male:124 ± 26 ml/min Female:119 ± 13 ml/min REF-http://courses.washington.edu/hubio562/normalLabs.html Plasma osmolarity 286 mOsm/L-NORMAL[N-276 - 295 mOsm/kg] Plasma sodium concentration 140 mEq/L-NORMAL Urine flow 1.44 L / 24 hour-7ml/6min-ie more than 1ml/min~NORMAL Urine osmolarity 205 mOsm/L-IS LESS THAN PLASMA-ABNORMAL Urine sodium concentration -? cant get anywhere with this Q,

Is it the equation - [GFR X Px - Urine volume X urine conc. of the solute] ??? My answer ud be A using that equation for determining absorption vs. secretion. Do u think they`d give us such big calculations anyways??? I mean ... it took me more than 72 seconds to convert the units but may I`m just dumb and there are easier ways to go around it

the answer is A sodium reabsorbed =amount filtered - amount excreted amount filtered =GFRXplasma Na conc =100X140 or 0.1X140=14 rate of excretion=urine flow xurine Na conc 1.44l/24hr=1.44x100/24X60 =0.1 so Na reabsorbed =14-0.1=13.9 so 14 A is answer

13.9 mEq is the amount reabsorbed in 1 min. The question is for one day and it should be D.
