Zoster vaccine live is the first FDA-approved vaccine for the prevention of herpes zoster in adults 60 years of age and older. Results of clinical trials have demonstrated administration of zoster vaccine reduces the burden of illness associated with herpes zoster (61.1%) and the incidence of herpes zoster and postherpetic neuralgia (51.3% and 66.5%, respectively) in older individuals. Overall, adverse events reported in clinical trials administering zoster vaccine live were classified as mild. Events that occurred more frequently in zoster vaccine live recipients than placebo recipients include injection site reactions, headache, respiratory infections, fever, flu syndrome, diarrhea, rhinitis, skin disorders, respiratory disorders, and asthenia. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's ACIP recently recommended universal vaccination for those 60 years of age and older, including those who have experienced previous episodes of shingles.
