I don't know if anyone has experienced this. I applied for a B1 with the reason that I was going to take CS in November. I indicated in the DS156 form that I will be there for just 2 weeks to show up for the exam. However, i changed my mind and now I'm planning to remain for the interviews. When I received my visa, it was annotated that I was to go to the US for Step 2 CS only, valid for three months. It further said that if I don't comply with the annotation, the visa will be invalidated, and this of course will be a bad record for me. My question is, can I still go there to take the exam, then ask the immigration officer for a longer period of stay so I can attend interviews? Or am I doomed to join the 2009 match already? Thanks.

I don't want to proceed with applications yet unless I am certain that the money won't be wasted if I cant stay for interviews anyway. Anybody who knows something about this, please help me. Thanks.

Hey bax. I'm in the Philippines. And yes, I know people here who got multiple entry visas, some 1 year, some 10. I really don't know if I should continue with my applications or leave everything for next year. If I continue applying, I may be incurring expenses that will just be wasted, if I cannot stay for the interviews. Thanks anyway. Good luck.

You can apply for an extension of the visa while in US giving valid reasons and providing relevant documents. The fees is $200 and it takes about a month to process. If the extension takes too long to process, then you should return and apply again from your home country. Meanwhile you should be prepared for the applicaions for residency.

Hi the_holy_man. Thank you for replying. Does this mean that i can still join the match? My visa says that it is for the CS only. Would you know if it is a breach of the annotation if I ask the immigration officer for a longer period of stay so i can attend the interviews? Or since it is annotated for the exam, that I can stay only until I finish it, and then I have to go home? I'm really worried that if i do get invited for interviews and I can't stay, all the money spent for applications will just be wasted. thank you very much

I am not an immigration expert, but my understanding is that you are not allowed to do an observership or attend an interview on this visa. And make sure you schedule your travel in such a way that your return flight to your home country is right after your cs exam date, so that there are no problems at the port of entry. However once you arrive in the US, after a couple of months, you can reschedule your flight and apply for extension of visitor visa based on new reasons like observership or attend interviews. You will have to provide documentary proofs for the reason of extension. Wait for an answer from the USCIS till the last days of your visa period. If you get the extension, well and good, if not, take the flight back home. This is completely legal and lots of IMGs successfully get the visa extension. Even if the request for extension is rejected or delayed, it will not reflect negatively in your profile.

I was on a B2 multiple entry. But upon entry they changed my status to B1-they were really tough on me, although I had strong documents supporting my purpose of stay(according to them externship is business, but they still let me in). So I extended my B1. Jut a note: I have had this visa(B2 mult) for 5 years now and have been coming and going frequently, maybe this helped me ...

Hi Medicus_81... u seem to be the b1-b2 expert in here. I'm trying to get an observership in USA to use it as a proof for my extension of stay but it is only a month or so left. So I was wondering the worst scenario if I cant get any observership to file to, then can I just pass the border to Canada or Mexico and come back the same day? I have 10 years multiple entry but I was stamped only for 3months at my port of entry.

Hey newyg! I wouldn't consider myself an expert here at all...I just happened to have gone through this experience. I wouldn't risk going across the border. I don't know what the rules for the b1/b2 stay are(meaning how many months a year can you stay in the US), but they can easily reject your entry if you just have been gone for a day. Try the extension process, file just a week before your stamp expires, provide as much documentation as you possibly can and who knows...by the time they give you approval/rejection 2-3 months may pass. Again I am not an attorney, but I wouldn't go across the border, too risky....

Hi there! I am kinda on the same boat, I just read my visa and saw the annotation: Taking USMLE in El Segundo Ca, staying 1-2 weeks, traveling alone. What documents do I need to bring with me just in case they need to see it at my POE?
