Hello, friends, I am filling the forms in MyERAS. In the training section, there is a choice of osteopathic internship. What does that mean. I did one-year intership before graduation. Is it a kind of osteopathic internship? Thanks!

osteopathic applies only to graduates of osteopathic med schools, which to my knowledge are to find only in the US. They are DO(= doctor of oesteopathic medicine), not MD(doctor of medicine). DO's apply to DO-friendly programs, their exam system is not the USMLE but COMLEX and if they want to go to MD programs(=allopathic), most of them have to take USMLE in addition to COMLEX. They are a minority in the graduates, but I actually like them because unlike MDs they have a lot of classes in manipulative medicine next to the regular MD curriculum(kind of chiropractors, that's why it is osteopathic). So this osteopathic thing does not apply to you.

D.O can take any residency program ,M.D or D.O internship. once they are done with complex scores they donot do usmle exams step 1 and 2, they are not img like us .They are u.s physician so usmle exams after med schoool is just for us.There is no diffference in D.O and M.D here. They graduate from a U.S medical school and have the same upper hand as any U.S medical graduate just the degree name is different

hawaii, I would disagree with you on some points. Yes, they are US med graduates, but are still facing some difficulties when applying to MD programs, and most MD programs require USMLE next to COMLEX, the diffrence to IMG is that there are osteopathic programs- they take only DOs and not all states are DO friendly, so their choices are somewhat limited. But of course they don't take USMLE after graduation- they take them when still in school, parallel to COMLEX to increse their chances in the match. I worked with several DO students and doctors and this is what I have been told. Before doing the rotations I had no idea what a DO is. Yes, they do have the same education, plus manipulative medicine but they remain a minority and like we all feel it- minorities struggle more to get what they want

hehehe, I didn't know I know so much!!! I spent close to 8 months doing rotations(surgery and IM) in the US. I had the chance to talk to a lot of students and doctors and happened to be in a hospital with a good mix of DO and MD. This is where my knowledge about the system comes from. The rest- I started reading a lot - on the web, here in this forum...There are still some areas where I am absolutely clueless, but what I know I share! And when it comes to the match, guys, I am in the same boat as you are and have the same fears!
