Hello everyone, I'm an IMG from Nepal and will be completing my internship by this August, i.e 31st August 2007.

Can someone please tell me, what will be the appropriate schedule for me to take step1, and step2, if i start preparing for step1 from September 1, 2007.

By when should i have all the results in my hand so as to get maximum number of Interviews and for proper matching.

Sorry if this question is being repeated, but i'm tired of searching proper timing for USMLE both in this forum and in the internet.

Plase guide me with effective monthly schedule for step1, step2, interview and matching.

thank u

Hi,
I imagine you want to start PGY1 on July 2008. There is no a standard schedule because all depends how much time you will have and need to prepare the exams and what is your goal (pass/master it). All depends what specialties and, particularly, programs you want to apply. Programs are straight forward describing their requirements. Some programs want documents (results) by November, others by February; you need to review each particular program's website but for sure, by the time of the entreviews you need to present what they are requesting, they will never look back in your application.
Good luck

thank you, Torontonian for ur support !
but i'm still confused about the matter. I've read the forum and it says "You'll get the most interviews if u apply before august", so for that i've to complete my CS by june right ? But if i'm late and didn't get much of the interviews then i've to wait all the year just for the next group of interview session, this is what i know, am i right ? if not plz correct me .

as far as preparation time is concerend, well that depends on me, but i still want to know, which month to give step1,when to give step 2. by when should i apply for interview for better response. I'm still not clear about this matter, so if u can help me, i would really appreciate it !
thank u

Hi, you are correct.
Please check this timetable
http://www.aamc.org/students/eras/timeline/start....
As you see, you can start applying to programs each september 1st. What happens next is that programs start downloading applicants' documents. Each individual program stablishes until when they will download applications and what documents they will request. For example, one could said we will receive applications until december 1st, applicants will be contacted for entreviews before january 1st; we only require step 1 results. However other could said, our application deadline is january 1st and we will call for entreviews during january-february, we require ecfmg certification. The latter is most difficult as it will take you time not only to write the exams but most of the time you want to know your results in order to apply to a specific program.
In summary, you need to have ALL the requirements by September 1st if you want to have MAXIMUM chances; if not, your chances start going down but their is always a small opportunity until the "scramble time" which is usually when you can apply for the "left overs" (after march). When to write the exams depends of you (you may write both 15 days apart or in any order); you need to make your own schedule but remember that you only have one chanceif you pass

Dear RTJ,

Here is my suggestion to you with my uneducated assumption that you are a new grad (or soon to be grad) and probably need a visa to get to the US.

Since you are relatively young, I would advice that you take your time with your exams. As USMLE gets more and more competitive every year, and with less IMGs receiving a match position, plan yourself accordingly. You may have the advantage of being a new grad and may feel ready for the exams which may be applicable. But make sure you are well prepared to receive acceptable scores. If you will need H1 type of visa (meaning you are not a citizen, nor are you a green card holder), you may want to make sure to take Step 3 to increase your chances for match.

This forum is very useful and you can get a good idea what people (Especially) IMGs are going thru the exams and match process. Then you decide for yourself and work off of a plan.

your first priority to how to study for exams and prepare well for them. These exams have not been easy for any immigrant. All passed with hard work, alot of dedication, struggle and passion.
That is why I find so many brilliant immigrants on this forum.

So your first step is to ask everybody how to score high and prepare for usmle ,then evaluate yourself and decide the time you will need to score high, then comes the month of appearing for exam and then comes the match and residency.
so I hope you go step wise and understand the process .Good luck for your exams.wink
