I just finished a nice personal statement which has about 8000 characters i.e about 3 pages (while eras allows 28000characters)....but now I have read somewhere that please your personal statement should not be more than 1 page long as Program directors get bored of reading long PS.....is this true.Should I delete stuff from it although I believe it's pretty interesting ? Thanks in advance, Dr.Luck going for 2008 match

Hey Dr. Luck, I had a brief conversation with a PD and he said (quote): "keep it interesting and short. I don't want to know if you grew up in a family with 11 siblings, if you starved and if you walked 5 km to school every day to prove me that you had a hard life". He wanted to know your drive without eleborating on several pages what a battle you had in life, and his advise: don't present yourself as a victim of circumstances. My opinion on this is also to keep it short- if you sum up the documents for each applicant(CV, PS, LORS) you can easily come up with 10 pages per applicant or even more...now in a small program with no more than 100-200 applicants to read all this info seems kind of doable, but in a competitive program with several hundred , up to a thousand applicants...I am not sure.

I think PS should really be no more than 1 page... as no one has time to read all of it.. & small & sweet always leaves a strong impact ..

Mine is only 500 words I attended a workshop in Kaplan and people there advise maximum is 1 page. Programs have to read lots of stuff, long PS make them bored and not impressive.

Hey kitty...I am good. How about u.U must be busy in the match prep as well...phew I hope it ends soon but with all of us matched at our programs of choice inwhichever specialty we all wanna go into....AMEN....

No more than one page. 3 paragraphs Remember to start with a "bang" something that caughts the reader attention and makes them want to keep on reading it. first paragraph: At the end of your paragraph your reader has to be clear about your reasons to have choosed that particular specialty and how much you like it and want that...the trick is...you should not say it with those words but use a story of your personal life or something interesting to let the reader know this things. Second paragraph: This allows you to tell the reader how well you are suited for the specialty ( that you are smart, talented so on and so forth)...trick is again you should not put it in words...it should be sutile with a story also that let the reader know that you are amazing without saying soooo jajajaja tricky ja? Third paragraph: Summary..... this also allows you to say with words what you said in your first 2 paragraphs now you can say you are smart, responsible bla bla bla with your own words..Try to do a summary meaning you will say ...I want to do x specialty because ble ble, I am a great candidate because ble ble ble... let them know how hard you want it and how good you are that they should not let go the opportunity of having you around...also you can say in this paragraph you future carrier goals.... finish with a bang and be sure that you are remembered and sound like a very interesting smart person they would want to meet once they read your page..... Hope that helps it helped me a lot.

Books for Residency: 1.) The Successful IMG: Obtaining a US Residency 2.) Iserson's Getting into a Residency: A Guide for Medical Students There are lots of books out there for residency. I HIGHLY recommend the first book for for IMGs. The time might seem SHORT to read a book about residency now. However, the interview period might be SHORTER. And waiting for the March result in March 08, might be SHORTEST - if you found out you did not use all the available info at your disposal! Good luck to you all.
