Has anyone seen it? If you haven't I highly suggest you go out and see it. Even if you are studying, take a short break and go see it. It will give you a lot to think about as a doctor practicing medicine in the US health care system. I would like to know what you all think about the movie and the message.

It is about managed care in the US. The movie shows how our health care system is flawed, and how other countries which have a socialized health care system are better off. I didn't agree with everything in the movie, but it is definitely a conversation starter and gives you a lot to think about.

Fantastic and realistic movie I came to USA from a developing country, when I first saw the quality of health care here I couldnot belive that, after watching this movie I realised that this is universal all over the country. I really like to work as a doctor in this country, but donot like to be a patient (anywhere especially) here.

US healthcare is outstanding for those that have the money or a proper insurance, come on, no waiting list - that means immediate treatment and access for screening and imaging, best docs, best technology, what else do you need? As a doc, if you work in acedemia you and prolly ur family get "free" healthcare in addition to your salary. Here in DK ppl often waiting a month or more for a cancer treatment, thats just horrible and you often get much inferior care in rural and suburban areas. Id rather pay the money and get my cancer burned or cut immediately.

Let me have an example for you, Jackofknives, to know more about this. My nephew was affeceted by a pneumonia last month.( He is 18 months old). He was affected by common cold before having it, but after one week of having cold, his signs got worse, plus he had a 39.8 C fever + cough+ rales in his right lung. Diagnosis of pneumonia could be made clinically. So I told his parents that he has pneumonia, and it is necessary for him to go doctor to prescribe antibiotic for him ( I cannot prescribe because as you know, I donot have my liscense here. ). First day when they talk to their family physician he told them ( by phone, without visiting the child)that it is his cold which is continueing, so no need to worry and only they could give him tylenol for his fever. He couldnot sleep of cough that night, and despite tylenol every 4 hours his fever was never less than 39 C. Next day they talked to Doctor again and requested for a office visit. They told me that docotr only examined his throat & his ears (not his lungs) and again gave them reassurance and told them that he will be relieved in the next days. ( no antibiotic prescribed again). That night again he couldn't sleep becoz of cough, and the fever was still so high. So I told them to take the child to the Children's Hospital( which is a very good hospital and rich people go there). Next day I went with them to the children's hospital. Registration and taking triage paper took about 40 minutes. Even he was considred a yellow triage patient( emergent) It took about 40 minutes for us to be visited by a pediatric resident. She ordered CXR, and believe me or not, we were waiting 3 hours in radiology waiting room for his turn to come. All of this time, the sick child was moaning and crying. After 3 hours of waiting, the CXR was taken, and this time he was visited by the attending physician( fortunately we didnot wait again) and she prescribed Amoxicillin+ tylenol. Obtaining the medication also took about 40 minutes. At the end of the month when the hospital sent them the bill, it was 2400 $. 2400$+ plus about 5 hours of waiting for diagnosis of Pneumonia and prescription af antibiotic+ tylenol!!!! If I served in my country in the hospital that I work ( which is a public-insurance hospital for poor people) I would order a CXR, after being sure of having the patient pneumonia, I would prescribe Amoxicillin + fever reducing medication like Acetaminophen and if the cough was so sever and distracting, a cough remedy suitable for a child like Diphenhydramine( 3 medications). All of the process ( patient registration+ triage+ physician visit+ taking CXR+ physicain visit again & prescription+ taking the drug from hospital pharmacy) took 1.5-2 hours for free. That's why I say I prefer not to be sick here. Anyways, have you seen the movie Sicko? The couple at the beginnig of the film who had to sell their house were rich people.

Do they live in an underdesired area, if I may ask? You can find this kind of care everywhere, inexperienced or indifferent FP, long waiting time in the ER etc. also, hedieh you probably worked in a decent level 3 hospital back in your country, am I right? You cant compare the best hospitals from one country with a below average one from another country.

We live in California, Sanfransisco bay area. ( one of the best area in US) . And I compared a high-quality hospital( as you might know, educational hospitals here considered of the best and most expensive ones_ in contrast to where I came from) here with a medium-quality (a public- insurance for poor people- not a private one for rich people) in my country.(both level 3) Like jackofknives, I could not believe the healthcare system of here- the most powerful country of the world-at the beginning. As Jackofknives said before, they have the most equiped hospitals, very good physicians, the most sophisticated tools and machines, but from the point of a patient, the system is unequal, expensive and time consuming.

so what u r saying is that US healthcare is inefficient, not cost effective and sub par? it might be true that its unequal but its hard to believe that for those that can afford it, the care provided is overall inferior to other countries.

I presume a major factor to the low rank is due to the unequality? if you take unequality out of the equation and only consider the portion of healthcare provided to the people that can afford the cost, then wouldnt you think the rank would go considerablely higher? And how do you compare healthcare? By comparing life expectancies, infant mortalities, the cost of repairing a hernia? In these turns US are in a disadvantage bc of the inequality, strong economy and high salaries to the MDs. But on the other hand if you compare the mortality and recovery rate in surgery and other hospitalizations US would prolly exile. As we agreed US has all the powerhouses and that in turn would increase the cost but it doesnt make sense that the quality of care is inferior.

The people that cannot afford are also humans, Jackofknives. And their population in the society is high. And about the infant mortality rate, you can refer to CNN news: CNN.com - U.S. has second worst newborn death rate in modern world ... I copied and pasted a part of it: (CNN) -- An estimated 2 million babies die within their first 24 hours each year worldwide and the United States has the second worst newborn mortality rate in the developed world, according to a new report. American babies are three times more likely to die in their first month as children born in Japan, and newborn mortality is 2.5 times higher in the United States than in Finland, Iceland or Norway, Save the Children researchers found. Only Latvia, with six deaths per 1,000 live births, has a higher death rate for newborns than the United States, which is tied near the bottom of industrialized nations with Hungary, Malta, Poland and Slovakia with five deaths per 1,000 births.......... You can read the rest the page in the bottom link. The adress of link is: www.cnn.com/2006/HEALTH/parenting/05/08/mothers.index/index.html

Yes, system might be flawed but what i was refering to was that the quality of care should not be inferior if not better than most countries. and hedieh, you said you dont want to be a pt in the states, i dont see the reason why, as a physician ur healthcare is either covered by ur fat pay check or by the institution.
