initially i did not undertand the qn, coz 'quantity of food' sounds ambiguous. is it asking calorific value... or what?

but if we talk if volume, the way most people seem to have approached it, i'd go with carbs too. that's B.

i guess it's becoz being so water-soluble, it is osmotically active, and hence pulls a lot of water with it.

am i right, drhouse?

no paheli,
i said food quantity. it doesnt mean, it will draw water and make large quantity.
in that case it would lead to osmotic diarrhea or something else

let others try to give mechanism. its interesting.

Proteins and Fats are 'filling foods' and cause early satiety. I think they also cause least blood glucose fluctuations. So u eat less.

(BTW Atkins diet is protein and Fat based )

Farayam u r going on right tract.

here goes the explanation.......

Fat and protein releases CCK from the I cells of the duodenum. CCK stimulates its receptor in the pylorus and contract pyloric muscles, inhibit gastric emptying. Inhibition of gastric emptying leads to distension of the stomach. which stimulate stretch receptor in the stomach wall, impulse travel through vagus nerve to nucleus tractus solitarius to satiety center of hypothalamus. this gives feeling of satiety.

other mechanism.
CCK has receptor in the brain CCK-B. circulating CCK stimulate its receptor in the area postrema of the brain which lies outside the blood brain barrier and just adjecent to nucleus of tractus solitarius. it releases leptin. leptin also stimulate satiety center in the hypothalamus and thus feeling of satiety.

Carbohydrate doesnt stimulate realease of CCk. so doesnt gives feeling of satiety. but i think with CHO foods, if it feels stomach and distend it can produce feeling of satiety through stretch receptor. but for that u need feel sotmach full of CHO.
